Product Description

Engineers who need to connect electronic functions in a practical, modular form that is both manufacturable and maintainable face a bewildering mix of connectors and technologies. Their task becomes much easier with this first handbook to present an overall framework for understanding connector design and function. Packed with data on connectors that's organized in easy-access tables, the handbook both covers the basic functions of connectors and details the full range of electronic connectors available today. Connector parameters are discussed in an application context to expedite implementation, and extensive design and materials selection criteria are provided for the full range of connectors. Users will tap techniques for determining a connector's potential degradation mechanisms, the degradation mechanisms that will be active in the application, and the criteria for failure in a connector.

From the Back Cover

Your complete guide to choosing the right connectors for today's electronic systems. Are you bewildered by the large number of connectors and technologies currently available for high-performance electronic systems? This landmark reference is the first to offer you an overall framework for understanding connector design and function. Covering a wide range of today's connectors, the handbook gives you the expertise needed to connect electronic functions in a practical, modular for that is both manufacturable and maintainable. Included is hands-on information that will enable you to: Develop a solid grasp of contact interfaces, finishes, materials, designs, and housing; Make the most of signal, power, and other connector applications; Master the various connector types, such as board-to-board and wire/cable-to-wire/cable; Learn the performance tradeoffs of different kinds of connectors; Apply the latest methods of mechanical, electrical, and environmental connector testing. This time- and money-saving tool will also help you ensure connector reliability by providing step-by-step details on degradation mechanisms, laboratory evaluation programs, reliability estimation, and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid intro to connectors, 1 Aug 2000
By Joe Laus - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Electric Connector Handbook: Technology and Applications (Electronic Packaging and Interconnection Series) (Hardcover)
This is a good book for those not familar with the techinical issues concerning connectors. It doesn't get too technical to scare you away, but has enough details to estabilish the basics you need to know about these components. Not recommended for the experienced who may want to know more details of a particular connector subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Engineering Resource, 30 Nov 2010
By D. Ings - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Electric Connector Handbook: Technology and Applications (Electronic Packaging and Interconnection Series) (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding engineering resource for anyone whose product reliability depends on crimped connections. The explanations of the physics and design principles enabled us to solve a very serious field problem and establish criteria to ensure we will never have it again. I did not focus on the sections of the book that deal with the connector and housing technologies, but my scan of them suggested they also provide excellent foundations in fundamental material science and proven design guidelines. The stated objective of the book is to give engineers the knowledge they need to make the right selections based on the application requirements rather than broad "rules of thumb." Contrary to the other reviewer's opinion that this is an elementary introduction, my experience as a working engineer is that this is a superb technical reference that presented levels of technical detail that I was unable to find through an extensive Internet search. Even though the few available used copies are expensive, they are worth the investment for anyone whose product reliability depends on crimped connections (and connectors) that are used in harsh (and even benign) environments. If you can't buy a copy, depending on your library system, you may be able to borrow one from an engineering library.
