An Aukland thriller., 17 Aug 2010

This thriller feels like Less Than Zero set in Aukland, except with a plot. Sam Usher works for a firm that restores data on hard drives. When not working (and sometimes while working), he's getting high. He meets up with a man and woman who are bright, mathematician-scientist types, who also spend their time getting high. The slightly convoluted mystery begins when the man ends up in the hospital and the woman disappears. The protagonist is left to uncover the meaning of a note he received from the man: the words ANYWAY FREEDOM GOODBYE and some numbers. A fair amount of violence ensues.
The plot isn't terribly credible, but Taylor's writing is strong, the pace is quick, and the story delivers enough gritty intrigue to make the novel a fun read. Besides, how often do you find a thriller set in Aukland? I would give Electric 3 1/2 stars if Amazon offered that option.
