About the Author
Arvid Linde is a car engineer from Estonia, with an MSc in Engineering and Logistics. Electric cars and other means of alternative transportation are his favourite subjects. Having successfully completed his Masters project on Electric Car Economy, and following extensive research in the field, he is now editing an independent green motoring blog at electriccarnews.co.uk. Arvid has been known to take a rather sceptical stance on electric cars, but in this book he shows, even-handedly, both their good and bad sides; ultimately encouraging people to embrace the future of green motoring.
This book is great for reading up on electric cars. It covers so many aspects in great detail. The book focuses on safety of electric cars which is a big concern for a lot of people including myself. The book explains things from the point of view of a consumer which is also how I like books to be written. Over all great book if you are interested in finding out more about electric cars and the future of them. Great props to the writer. Will I be buying an electric car now? Possibly.
I have recently started learning to drive and therefore I've been looking into a car to buy. I am very fhe or the environment however I've found the idea of electric cars hard to grasp. I bought this book simply to find out and because it was from the RAC I felt it would be more reliable than others. I was very pleased with the time book took to arrive as well as the look of it. I haven't yet finished reading the book but from what I have read I feel that all the gaps in my knowledge have been filled up. I've been able to extract the pros and cons from the book to make a decision in just 2 days as well as many other green tips. For those who are considering such a car or are just unsure altogether or would like a green alternative this is definately a book to invest in.
As well as the great content of the book it go a really easy layout, the sections of the book are very practical and you can look at the most important issues to you easily. Without sounding too childish I think that the best thing about the book is the pictures, there are loads of high quality pictures that made me realise that electric cars are not ugly after all.
This already out of date guide contains a number of factual inaccuracies.
For example, regarding the mpg figures of the Toyota Prius Plug-in, the book doesn't differentiate between US and UK gallons, which are different volumes and therefore give different mpg figures. From a UK perspective, the figures quoted are clearly wrong. The book also contains out of date or erroneous information about various current or forthcoming electric vehicles.
Worst of all, it completely sidesteps the issue of rising oil prices (and the possible causes) which are fundamentally altering both the comparative cost and the perception of electric vehicles.
It doesn't appear that the author even actually owns an electric car, as he says: ". . . I would still probably buy one as a second car if I had a large family or lived in a large city."
If you're looking for an accurate, up to date book about electric vehicles, based on real-world experience and not opinion, leave this one on the shelf and buy Michael Boxwell's excellent 'The 2011 Electric Car Guide' instead. It's also cheaper.
