5.0 out of 5 stars Little Big Man 6 Jun 2005
By Tanya
Format:DVD
An all time favourite - it has the flavour of the 70s, a gripping thriller of a plot, uniquely believable and painfully flawed characters, black humour and Robert Blake! What more could you need?

Blake is a highway patrolman, tired of cruising the blacktop on his Electraglide, who dreams of one day becoming a detective. When a for real murder mystery drops into his lap, he gets his chance to prove himself...but it's not quite how he imagined it.

This is CHiPs meets Blood Simple. A gem of a film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iconic 70s Movie 19 July 2009
Format:DVD
Worth it for the opening titles alone which have never been surpassed for the integration of the music with freeze frames. The title sequence of CHiPS (1977)would probably never have happened had EGiB not existed !

The DVD has the bonus of the trailer which captures much of the film's essence and an interesting interview with the director, James William Guercio. What a pity he made nothing else.

There are strong performances from Robert Blake and the best portrayer of American "trailer trash" of his generation, Billy "Green" Bush, who also starred in Bob Rafelson's 5 Easy Pieces (1970). Add to that, the fantastic setting and reasonable plot and you have an enduring classic from the golden age of American cinema - the Seventies.

5.0 out of 5 stars An icon from the 70's 17 July 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
For those remembering this first time around you'll remember the talked about comparison with Easy Rider... the good guys/ bad guys thing... On watching the film again it is just as good as I recall and the character nuances, skill of performance and fantastic scenery all add up to a great film. On top of a great film you get a great plot and even better music ... particularly the last track 'Tell Me' .... so put it all together for a top notch, evocative and moving experience... excellent !!!. I'm surprised the movie is only just out out on DVD and just as surprised that the soundtrack is only available on vinyl...(which I've tracked down and purchased)... lets hope its out on CD soon. p.s. guess you've guessed the bikes are Harley Davidsons so if you have a yen for the bikes thats yet another reason to get the film !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Rider on speed 1 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
I think many people are put off this film by the title-they think it's a porn film. The script, the acting, the direction and the photography are superb! The scenery - mainly Monument Valley, is breathtaking, in fact I can't think offhand, of any way in which this film is not superb. I couldn't say how many times I have watched this film over the years, at least fifteen times, and I can always watch it again! Well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars hasn't dated a bit! 20 Nov 2011
Format:DVD
One of the four great Road Movies of the late 60s early 70s, the others being Easy Rider, Two Lane Blacktop and Vanishing Point. Ther'e's an innocence and naiivety in John Wintergreen that's fresher and less nihilistic than the other films. He has ambition, at least at first, a dream of bettering himself. The Driver in Two Lane Blacktop seems locked within his own inertia, unable to exploit the wide horizons he drove towards. Captain America in Easy Rider is lost within a society that doesn't understand him, looking for a utopia that he'll never find. Kowalski, too, in Vanishing Point, has reached a moment when he realises that he's simply too tired to carry on playing the game.

All four films are tragedies, but Electra Glide in Blue retains a sense of innocence throughout in John Wintergreen's irrepressible optimism - even when his dream of becoming a detective goes sour he still retains a sense of good-natured tolerance right up to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I hoped it would be 12 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
The definition of a cult film must be that it is hard to find. And that many of your friends don't know it. Both of those are true here. In fact, there is no current Region 1 release (I live in the U.S.) so I purchased it from amazon.co.uk. It was worth the extra work and cost.

For serious fans of the movie, there are still a few frames missing from the end. These were reportedly cut from the U.S. theatrical release in order to get the rating down to a PG. Supposedly the original UK version was more graphic (I'm trying not to spoil anything). But this new release by Optimum, while R2, still does not include the 17 frames either. Presumably they used the US master?

In any case it's a great DVD: Beautiful transfer, great soundtrack, and a career performance by Robert Blake.

The biggest question of course is why Jim Guercio never directed another film. Unfortunately he doesn't really address this on either the Introduction or in the Director's commentary. The former is very good and full of insight, the latter is more sparse; invariably Mr. Guercio seems uncomfortable talking over the film and down to the viewer, preferring to let his work speak for itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The summer of '74 12 Feb 2013
By Pete
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Back in 1974 I saw this film at the cinema 7 times in one week. You will appreciate that I am a little biased. For me, this is a classic. Why? It's a story of murder and corruption, the battle between good and evil and the ability of the underdog to take control. However, this is not a big action movie, it deals with things on a more realistic and somewhat more passive level. All this is coupled with some of the most amazing scenery and photographic work of any film. Then there's the ending! It has to be the most spectacular finale there has ever been, no bells and whistles but made powerful by its simplicity. Over 30 years later, this is still a masterpiece.
