Eddings was one of the original post-Tolkien stars of epic fantasy, but this is facile, infantile rubbish that I'd hesitate to give a five-year-old.

How very, very disappointing this book was, there was no plot let alone a sub-plot. For anybody who has read previous David Eddings books do not buy this one, there are no complexities of plot, no characters that you can emphathise with, they were completely flat, not even 2-dimensional. The barely there story line was slow, infantile and oh so predictable.
To be honest I find it hard to believe Eddings wrote this. His other work is of such astounding quality I am amazed he would want to be associated with such poor quality work. (Did he actually write it?) maybe it was intended as children's fiction but I would hesitate to recommend it to any child I know.

Very mediocre book by two of the Fantasy Genre's previously most successful, and respected writers. There is nothing original in the book, and it almost seems like the authors insist on going down the hill towards mediocrity and worse, started with the infamous "The Redemption of Althalus". As an old "fan" of the Eddings books I sincerely hope that they can find back to their old high standards of writing, but that can be hard as it sincerely seems like they're loosing their magic touch. This book is definitively worth avoiding.
