Product Description

Product Description

Elaine Stritch is without question one of the Grand Dames of Broadway. In a career spanning over 50 years she has starred in shows as diverse as Rodgers and Hart’s Pal Joey, Noel Coward’s Sail Away and most famously, Stephen Sondheim’s Follies and Company, as well as in numerous film and award-winning television series.

At the age of almost 80, Elaine Stritch is as dynamic as ever, giving an astounding performance in her highly successful show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty. This highly-acclaimed one-woman show has been a huge critical and commercial success in New York (both Broadway and the Public Theater) and in London. In a series of vignettes punctuated by songs from the shows in which she has starred, she tells stories, ranging from the hilarious to the deeply moving, from her turbulent life and career. The stories include her disastrous, but extremely funny date with Marlon Brando while they were at drama school together, a tour de force about standing in for Ethel Merman in Call Me Madam in New York while performing at the same time in Newhaven in Pal Joey, working with Noel Coward in Sail Away, failing to get a starring role in The Golden Girls because she insulted the writer and her later, ultimately successful struggles with alcohol and diabetes.

The 19 songs include:

  • Broadway Baby (Sondheim)
  • But Not For Me (Gershwin)
  • I’ve Been To a Marvellous Party (Coward)
  • The Ladies Who Lunch (Sondheim)
  • There’s No Business Like Show Business (Berlin)
  • Zip (Rodgers and Hart)
  • I’m Still Here (Sondheim)

I saw Elaine Stritch perform her one-woman show in London's Old Vic Theatre last Autumn. She had extraordinary energy. I hope this recording captures the same atmosphere. The marathon show contained very honest and often funny reminiscences, including her recollections of understudying Ethel Merman, dating Marlon Brando, and her past association with alcoholism. Cracking songs too! She recalled the golden age of Broadway, with a life full of real talent and hard graft. (It makes you wonder at today's so-called superstars, who expend more effort manipulating the media than they do developing their craft). This will be a treasure.

This DVD surprised me. I have been a fan of Elaine Stritch but I didnt quite get how brilliant she is until I picked up this dvd. She has the energy of an 18 year old and bright shining charisma that draws you into her wonderful stories that amuse and touch. If you want to see how a professional actress can grip an audience with the height of her powers then buy this dvd.

If you love musical theatre, if you love entertainment, if you love a great story - then this DVD will not disappoint. Elaine Strich is a consumate performer and her one-woman show - here filmed at the Old Vic in London - is dazzling. She will transport you back to Broadway and make you live it along with her. She will make you laugh and - yes - she will make you cry. This is her no-punches pulled story and you will want to watch it again and again.
