Never really cared too much for economics - history was always more interesting , although as one studies the latter one realises how much is shaped by the former . Then came the Great Recession and I asked my self what were the causes of this crisis. I struggled to find any real quality books about the Spanish crisis per se and then I stumbled on this author when I read one of his articles in an English newspaper which I really enjoyed.
The book is brilliant and so refreshing . As a member of the Spanish academic diaspora working in London he looks at Spain in a very different way to the way other economists often look at the country. No one is completely politically neutral but this book feels less political than other Spanish books which are often very much either leftwing or strongly right wing. He suggests fundamental reforms in Spain which are obvious to any body who knows anything in much detail about contemporary Spanish history but which are rarely aired in public. He even suggests it is time to scrap siestas - heaven forbid......what drag Spain into the 21st Century - it's surely too hot to work in the sweltering afternoon sun.......anyone would have thought that air conditioning had not been invented in Spain yet. A few controversial views, here and there, like paying head teachers more by increasing school class sizes as this would 'improve education' ...really Luis ? Nevertheless a fabulous book, often very funny and always thought provoking.
