Product Description

Spanish political thriller based on the true story of secret agent Mikel Lejarza, aka 'El Lobo' ('The Wolf'), who infiltrated the Basque terrorist group ETA between 1973 and 1975. Lejarza contributed to the fall of a quarter of the terrorist activists of the organisation, including several Special Forces members and some top-level figures of the group, and destabilised the terrorist organization at a time when its actions where becoming a perfect justification for the most conservative arm of the Franco regime to take full powers and stop the democratic process in Spain. The film was awarded two Goya awards in its native Spain and nominated for a further three.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Spanish ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), Spanish ( Dolby DTS 5.1 ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Making Of, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Based on a true story. In the 70's, during the last stages of Franco's dictatorship, Txema, a basque construction worker, is arrested because of his connection to some terrorists who have just committed a murder. The secret service see in him an ideal candidate to infiltrate the terrorist band ETA and become a mole, so they try to offer him a deal if he will do so. At first he's not too interested, but his financial problems (probably caused by the secret service itself) finally force him to take their money and accept the mission. He adopts the undercover name of "Lobo" (Wolf) and becomes an active member of the band, making all the right connections until he reaches the top and acquires the trust of its leaders. In the process, he discovers that the group has deep internal divisions between those who want to abandon the armed fight and become just a political party, and those who want to keep the terrorist activity until they can proclaim the independence of the Basque country. These divisions and power struggles are often resolved bloodily. After the band carries out their most daring and shocking crime yet, killing the prime minister Carrero Blanco, the military heads in Madrid become impatient and wish to launch an immediate attack on ETA and the basque country. Ricardo, the chief of the secret service, convinces them to wait until Lobo can complete his mission and enable them to dismantle the band. But when the Barcelona police manage to catch the leader of the band (who had been ratted out by another member who wanted his position), the generals, jealous of this success, decide they can't wait any m...The Wolf (2004) ( El Lobo )

4.0 out of 5 stars True story about an undercover agent 6 Feb 2010
Based on the true story of the only man to successfully infiltrate Basque terrorist group ETA (he was undercover for three years), El Lobo ('Wolf' -the code name for the undercover agent) unfolds during the early 1970s in the dying days of the Franco dictatorship.
Txema (the man's real name was Mikel) (Eduardo Noriega) is coerced into acting for the Spanish Secret Services when they come across evidence to suggest that he knew about a planned assassination of an alleged informant (he tried to warn the man about what was going to happen) and this creates a (very effective) uneasy tension throughout the film. On the one hand, Txema agrees with some of ETA's aims (he wants the Basque Country to be separate from the Spanish State) but disagrees with their methods (i.e. assassinations and bombings), but on the other he's treated in a rather cavalier fashion by his handlers in the secret services (a wonderfully imperious performance by Jose Coronado) -this leads the audience to question where his true loyalties lie given that he's pushed and threatened by both sides. At the same time as that is going on, the ETA leadership is becoming divided on the issue of how to accomplish their political aims (violence or negotiation), setting up a potentially explosive showdown with Txema stuck in the middle.
This is a really well-made political action thriller that manages to combine a bit of Spanish history (although dramatic license has been taken with chronology and names have been changed, it is generally factually accurate in terms of the background machinations both within ETA and the secret services) with impressive action set-pieces. It was a big box office hit in Spain.
