I watched El Cantante, and it is an enjoyable film, especially for anyone with an interest in salsa. The soundtrack certainly delivers. It is clear that Marc Anthony and the producers have a good eye for detail- the vocals are clear and expressive, the brass section is well tuned and it's been mixed well. I've taken the time to find the Hector Lavoe originals, and can honestly say that these cover versions are better. Mi Gente was a smash hit in the 70s, and has a really nice vibrant feel to it. If you're interested in dancing: El Cantante is mid-tempo and is danceable. Mi Gente is up tempo, but danceable. Aguanile is very fast, and is my favourite track because it's full of drama, with an excellent vocal performance, telling the story of when Hector was in the grip of drug addiction. Aguanile was the start of the cleansing process. There's a good rendition of Che che cole and El dia de suerte. The slow tracks Escandolo and Que lio have nice meoldies, and the brass and piano contributions of Que lio are better than in the Lavoe original. The final Lopez track is fine but doesn't really gel with the rest of the album. Overall this is a good album of high quality Latin music. Highly recommended.
