Royal treat... 16 Sep 2007
By Stratonautus TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra in Rajasthan, shooting in Devigarh, Jaipur and inside the living quarters of the Jaipur Royal Family. Prince Raghavendra Rathore and Subarna Rai Chaudhari designed the costumes for the film.

Set in contemporary India the story is really about fulfilling one's Dharma. Seen from the angle of the royal guard Eklavya whose family has for nine generations guarded the Kings of Devigarh. Eklavya and the Queen hide a secret...

This is a story full of interesting twists and unexpected turns which keep your attention going throughout the background of unfolding turmoils in which the papier-mâché kingdom is steeped. It also deals with the caste system in modern times and the strives toward modernisation being made under democracy. Symbolic as it may be, the palace is still illuminated by candles and torches. Over 600 camels were used in one scene. Excellent music and wonderful colourful shots. I have not given the full 5 stars because the trailers cannot be fast forwarded or skipped and really spoil the enjoyment of the film.

Very well acted , just the enough time to tell the story ( without the typical bollywood turnarounds ) and surprise ... just only one marvellous song ! Higly recommended .

Elegant Movie 27 Aug 2007
By shimi subramaniam - Published on Amazon.com
This movie is sort of a gloss on Hamlet, Indian style. I thought it was beautifully shot and well-acted. The script is tight, and the only scene I didn't like was the improbable ending. There are stand-out performances from the usual reliables: Amitabh Bachnan, Imran Bomani, Saif Ali. I highly recommend it.

Excellent characters and cinematography 22 July 2007
By Glenn W. Gaarder - Published on Amazon.com
Every once in a while I stumble across a great movie like this. Incredible character development. Eloquent dialog. Suspense. Emotion. The subtitles were translated crudley but the clever dialog still came thru. One key is that "Baba" means Father. That wasn't clear till later in the movie. Pay close attention to the dialog and all the double meanings. I would put this right up with Dr. Zhivago. I would buy a new copy if they can get a better translation. I rarely see movies I consider good, so this one really stands out.

Eklavya: The Trusted Bodyguard 29 Nov 2008
By Prominence - Published on Amazon.com
Eklavya reminds me so much of The Man in the Iron Mask: the plot of having the heir to the throne fathered by the most trusted bodyguard. While the stories are entirely different, I relished every moment watching the interaction between all the characters. Every single one of them light up the screen and embody their different characters so well that one forgets quite easily it's fiction. My favorite scene is when Jackie Shroff gets thrown over the a train track (don't want too give off to many details). I thought it was beautifully shot like every other scene and rather engaging. It's my favorite because it stands out to me the most. In Eklavya, the emotions, and elements of suspense are not lost. This is where I disagree with a previous reviewer. Eklavya is by no means mediocre.
