If you want to step into the shoes of a great explorer and travel across the globe then enter the virtual world of Eingana. This ambitious and unusual title is a cross between an electronic atlas and a computer video game. It takes a while to install which is hardly surprising given the amount of 3-D content and satellite images it offers. You can then travel quickly through a virtual representation of planet earth, sweeping over high mountain ranges, visiting countries and cities, and seeing and hearing animated creatures. You can visit forests, tops of mountains or journey underwater. The best place to start is the demo, which automatically takes you on a quick tour taking in herds of elephants and giraffes as you sweep over breathtaking computer-generated landscapes.

This title will be hugely entertaining for enthusiastic video gamers. Not only does it include virtual creatures alive today, but it also features mythical ones such as the Yeti, who you can find on the Himalayan glaciers. At the bottom of the screen various pieces of information are displayed, such as the height above ground and sea level according to where you are based on this virtual representation of the earth's surface.

It is hard not to be impressed by the amount of work that has gone into generating these virtual models of the world. The long-term aim is for you to be able to build houses, create virtual representations of yourself and virtually inhabit these lands that have been created. --Justin Hunt

If you're interested in Geography, or you (or children) would like to learn about the Earth's topology, its animals and the names of countries/cities, then you'll get a lot out of Eingana. Eingana is a simulation of the world in 3-d (similar to the detail you'd get from a flight simulator).
When the program starts up, you are presented with a 2D map of the world. On clicking a point on the earths surface, you are then transported to that location in full 3d. Although you don't have habitable detail (cities, towns, villages, roads), you are presented with topology (generated by fractal mathematics) and in some major cities, satellite images which at around 5000 feet looks quite impressive. All the important topological data is labelled (countries/cities/mountains/rivers etc.) which means that as you fly around your chosen area, its always very easy to see where you are, and what feature may be worthy of closer investigation.
After you've explored an area in this way and have walked around to investigate what the terrain looks like, you can start looking for animals which is the 'game' element of the program. It's a lot of fun and many hours have been spent hunting for cheetahs, lions, tigers, trying figuring out which country they are likely to live in, and trying to catch them using the on-screen 'animal radar'. Once you have found an animal, you can save it to your 'album' where you are then prompted to hunt for further animals. Apparently, some are really difficult to find (the Yeti), which adds a really interesting element to the Eingana experience.
The only negative aspects of the product that stop me from giving it the full 5 stars is that (at the date of this writing) the Eingana website has not been fully translated into English which if you're a non-French speaker you may find problematic (eg. their updates page, and the information about how to register your plot of 'virtual land'). The product is also most complete (in terms of satellite data) for France and a few select European cities. The only city in Britain to have satellite data appears to be London. They advertise on their website that you will be able to update city information, but I haven't seen any evidence of this (perhaps I need to brush up on my French). Therefore, the majority of worldwide cities do not have satellite information and when you go to the ground level and walk around you will see a billboard that reads 'Coming Soon'.

To sum up, Eingana is a great educational product both for teaching about the location of cities/countries and for exploring the topology of the world.
