Dance On The Radio the Leeds based label has given the world the excellent ILikeTrains and the potentially very good indeed The Pigeon Detectives and has a fair old roster of acts of which notable things are expected. Forward Russia are one of those acts but sad to report that on the evidence of "Eighteen "things are not adding up for them.
Guitars scratch around in that second hand post punk way that has become very fashionable and the singer yelps and screeches like a Lemony Snicket version of Justin Hawkins but on this evidence it's not a very good song and rapidly becomes tiresome and rather irritating .The song is way too twitchy and anxious to really engage and the lyrics are too clever by half with lines like "and its another obsidian bloodbath ,but don't lie /when you said the Alps never would grow flat you called out wolf too many times". Poetic but complete garbage, unless I'm missing something.
"Six" is actually a better song with the more linear arrangement suiting the bands style and allowing/forcing singer Tom to obfuscate his nervy vocals and engage in some straight up screaming which I rather like and for the songs final third they morph into ILikeTrains style sensurround atmospherics.. The Napoleon Third remix of "Eighteen "showcases a half decent song after all, the thumping percussion based arrangement and quirky electronic instrumentation permitting the song to breathe and once again tempering the vocals.
Far be it from me to tell bands what direction to take but I feel "Forward Russia" might be better employed expanding on the approach taken for the remix and "Six" rather than the unremarkable derivative lead track, otherwise they may stall at the border. Cue them flooding across the plains and conquering the world...that's the way it usually works.
