Book Description

2 July 2009
This is a collection of startling monologues designed to be mixed up and presented in any order the audience decides. From high-class hookers to 7/7 survivors these monologues paint a revelatory picture of Britain as it is today. The monologues are ideal for performance by student and amateur groups; any number and any combination can be performed. They also provide excellent opportunities for actors looking for modern audition pieces. This edition also includes a ninth previously unperformed piece. "Eight" has been seen at the Trafalgar Studios in the West End and in Edinburgh and New York.

Review

The theatrical voice of her generation. Guardian

One of the most self-assured, startlingly well-written and moving pieces of theatre around. --The Herald

This is a truly impressive and exciting hour of theatre; and Ella Hickson is clearly not only a huge writing talent, but also a mean director, too. --The Scotsman

The writing is crisp and sharply observed, and Hickson's ability to catch the minds, hearts, thought processes and different speech styles of her characters is remarkable in so young a writer...remember the name, for I suspect we will be hearing a lot more from her. --Daily Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wow 16 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I was an intern at the Off-Broadway theater where this show went in the beginning of 2009, and I saw the show twice. I loved it. As I understood it, at the Edinburgh Fringe the audience selected 4 or 5 of the 8 monologues to hear each night. In NYC they did all 8 monologues, which made for around 2 hours of theater. Any show that can hold the attention of an audience for two hours of monologues without intermission is truly worthy of praise.

I don't know how the play is to read, since it's unavailable in the US, and after three years I'm finally in the UK and able to buy it. Shows my dedicated to the script!

The character depth is phenomenal, and the humor, even in the most brutal places, is well-placed and intricate. Anyone in this generation should see this play or read it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for a youth group 12 July 2011
Format:Paperback
A few of these monologues were touching and subtle, some a little predictable. The fact that I can only remember a few of them having only read it 3 months ago says much. What stuck me most however, was the limited age-ranges of the characters. I had an agenda though when I bought this, intenting to use it with an adult group but I think this is better suited to a senior youth group. So in that sense, this play didnt work for me and is not one I would rush to read again. However if you run a youth group for example, I can see that this would provide some challenging roles with some meaty characterisation to sink younger teeth into.

It is a very appealing book, I enjoyed reading it, it has that little humour that makes you smile as you read it. I would love to read another Hickson book
