In June 2007 my wife and i took a little trip to Memphis , just for the fun of it and to visit all the usual tourist attractions .Thoroughly enjoyed it too and what made it even better was when , on the last day of the trip , i strolled into Memphis Music on Beale Street and heard an absolutely beautiful voice singing about " A Nickel and a Nail " , well i had to ask the guy in the shop who was that fantastic singer and , yes , it was this man , O.V. Wright . Well ! What a revelation . Friends , i bought that CD straight away and it's utterly classic . A real gem and one of the greatest Southern Soul records i've ever heard . And here it is , 8 Men , 4 Women by the man himself . It's superb , so buy it .
What's really needed now is a new compilation of all his early stuff with updated sound and sleevenotes but for now this and "The Soul Of...." , whilst entirely inadequate , will have to do . Someday O.V. will get his true recognition because , believe me this guy was a better singer than Otis and that's saying something . Then again , so was James Carr but that's for another day.........
PS it's a real shame that neither O.V.Wright nor James Carr get much of a mention in the Memphis Rock n Soul Museum despite being , obviously , two of the greatest singers to ever be associated with that fine city . They only have so much room i suppose but still . However it's still well worth a visit as is Stax Museum out there on the famous McLemore Avenue .
