Product Description

'A snatched lunch-hour or daily commute doesn't have to be spent wasted, bored or uninspired'. A continuation of the successful "Short Story Reinvented" series, "Eight Hours" is a dynamic cross between the novel and the short-story, showcasing new writing from eight talented authors. Each story follows a different main character for a single hour and, from a fifteen year old girl who is so tormented she can't sleep, to a man who experiences counselling for the first time, the collection reveals an intriguing mix of powerful snapshots. Modern-day fiction at its immediate and vigorous best.

it has been years since i have picked up a book of short stories - and i can't believe it has taken me so long. Each story takes you through an hour and each one grabs your imagination... making an hour on the train disappear. And they got better and better - the last one - 1am by Daniel Gothard - had me in tears.

I will be keeping my eyes out for more by these new authors. and picking up more short stories in future too.

All told in the first person, each novella-length story is by a different author, and each follows a single hour in the life of a main character. The collection is a variable feast, some I liked, some I didn't. But I very much enjoyed the format and the fun of discussing with my wife our individual reactions to each. I particularly recommend 'The Moon On A Stick' by Hilary Lloyd; the powerful and moving account of a woman's struggle to find respite from the complex burdens of caring for an ailing mother.

Click on the picture of the book to listen to a short extract from another of the stories in this collection.... FIFTY-MINUTE HOUR, read by me, the author. (And if you enjoy that, you might like to try this also: Listening in: A Novel of Therapy and Real Life)
