This is not a review as such just a listing of which 'classic albums are actually on this set which may be of interest to people.

I would suggest that until some reviews are made here you should try Amazon USA to see if there are any there.
The sound on these 'public domain' releases varies a great deal.

This 4 CD set has the following albums included
'The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Vol 1',
'J is for Jazz',
'The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Vol 2',
'The Great Kai and JJ',
'Blue Trombone',
'A Touch of Satin',
'JJ Inc', and
'First Place'.

I'm attempting to find a track listing for these 8 classic Albums and will post it when I can.
In the meantime if any kind person has one or knows where to obtain one if they post a message in the comments box I will gladly credit them with their efforts.

Post script David Alan Start tipped me off about Amazon.com.
They now have the track listings where as before when I originally wrote the 'review' they did not.
the track listing.
Thanks to Amazon US (Amazon.com)

If any one knows the 'split' between CDs and albums just add a coment and I will adjust it again.

Given the quality of the music on the eight albums here, this is an amazing bargain. A number of the albums included are top 'Penguin' and 'Gramophone' Jazz Guide recommendations, including both volumes of 'The Eminent JJ Johnson', 'The Great Kai & JJ', and 'JJ Inc.', but the others are equally fine, covering a good chunk of the period 1953-61 and including other icons such as Freddie Hubbard, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Kai Winding et al.

The music here is a lovely blend of perky bop and lush ballads (with Bobby Jasper on flute making some gorgeous contributions on 'J is for Jazz'). Johnson's tone is seductively warm and mellow, and he avoids sharpness even in the up-tempo numbers, while Winding, Heath, Brown and Hubbard provide fine horn duets and workouts, while the smaller units with Johnson as solo horn, see fine keyboard partnerships with Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan and Victor Feldman. The rhythmn section keeps each piece motoring in fine style, with contributions from Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, Elvin Hayes and others on percussion, and the likes of Paul Chambers, Percy Heath, Sam Jones and Mingus et al on bass.

Sound quality is good too, with a rich, warm bloom to the recordings, and a useful insert listing the personnel on each album. There's a rich mixture of music here, but for me the slower ballads have an exquisite, haunting beauty which is simply unforgettable. I'd recommend you grab this lovely collection while it's at such a great bargain price, then settle back to listen, and congratulate yourself for your foresight!

I had not purchased one of these sets of 8 CD's before, so I was concerned that there would be no details of dates, etc, but at the price there was not a lot to lose. There are details of the year that the recording were made, plus who is on the various tracks, and the quality of the recordings is very good. It would have been good to have had a copy of the sleeve notes, but what do you expect for the price? To buy the individual albums would be a costly affair, if you can get all 8, so if you like J.J Johnson go ahead and buy these CD's, you will not regret it.
