This four CD set contains eight albums from Carmen.
The Albums are digitally remastered but some American reviewers have noted the sound so you may wish to check out their comments.

The collection is on 4 CDs encased in a double wide jewel case for the price of One CD or less makes this an attractive purchase.(Under a tenner on Feb 2013)

BUT when recommended this set by Amazon I found that there was no indication of which classic albums were included nor the track listing.

The digitally enhanced sound is a good indicator but for a proper review I really suggest you read other, more knowledgeable people's reviews.

If any kind soul can tell me the names of the classic albums and the 'split' over the 4 CDs I would be grateful. Just add a comment and I will cut and paste and give you a credit for your hard and kind work.

As always if you see any typos add a note and I will correct...

I thought I'd always REALLY liked Carmen Mcrae
so I shelled out on these- but I got tired of her
pretty quickly.
Don't get me wrong...she's fine for smooth Jazz,
but if you're after something a little deeper..?

5.0 out of 5 stars Merely OK sound, but a treasure of Carmen's earlier albums 7 Jan 2013
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
The albums in this four disc set are all from a six year period starting with Carmen's very first album released in 1954, to albums released between 1955 and 1961. Of course this does not represent all of her recorded work during the period, but these are albums that I would recommend to friends who wanted to dig deeper into Carmen's early work.

Total tracks for this collection is 92, which I will cross-reference to the albums below. But first a word about sound quality. These 'Classic' collections have come under a lot of fire from audiophiles for poor sound quality. Indeed some of the label's releases have some flaws, but this particular set has no egregious problems. Audiophiles will still hate it, but folks who are blessed with exceptional hearing and invested in high-end equipment should be looking for the albums on vinyl instead of cheap imports. To my ears the tracks sound fine and especially since I always rip my albums to MP3 files, which incurs a loss of some fidelity anyway.

Bottom line: this is an inexpensive way to obtain some of Carmen's early work if you are willing to accept that the tracks are not audiophile quality. Here is what you will be getting.

Tracks 1 through 8 comprise the original tracks on Carmen's first album from 1954 titled Carmen Mcrae. Reissues contain alternate takes, which are not included here.

Tracks 9 through 20 are the 1960 album titled When You're Away.

Tracks 21 through 32 are the 1955 album titled Torchy!

Tracks 33 through 44 are the 1956 album titled Blue Moon.

Tracks 45 through 56 are the 1958 album titled Carmen for Cool Ones. This album is out of print and hard to track down (not to mention expensive), so having it in this collection adds value to the set.

Tracks 57 through 68 are another 1958 album titled Birds Of A Feather. The album is so named because all of the songs have birds in their titles; example: Skylark.

Tracks 69 through 80 are the 1957 album titled After Glow, which is both difficult and expensive to obtain elsewhere. This is another reason to get this set if you are a fan or have been searching for this particular album.

The remaining tracks - 81 through 92 - are the Original 12 tracks from Carmen's 1961 tribute to her idol, Billie Holiday. The album is Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man And Other Billie Holiday Classics. Note that the 1997 reissue contains two bonus tracks that are not included in this set.

Please visit the linked pages for the individual albums for detained information and reviews written by some knowledgeable reviewers on most of the pages. Some of the linked pages also contain sound samples that will greatly aid in your purchase decision if you are new to Carmen's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars RE: A very Nice Collection! 26 May 2013

Those of us, who are familiar with Carmen's early output of albums, knows how exquisite they are. My input here, is to the sound quality of this set, because RealGoneJazz has put out a few, less than high quality sounding box sets. The Carmen McRae Box Set, I am happy to say, has very nice sound. I would even guess, that these are the remastered versions, because even the oldest album, sounds beautiful. You take your chances with these UK Royalty Free Box Sets, but this one is just fine. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Good To be True. 30 Nov 2013

Great CD. She is a wonderful yet underrated singer. From listening to this CD she can sing circles around some of the light weights being promoted by the media. It is no wonder that many of us have lost our way. We can't understand the words to the music. This CD provides the opportunity for many to hear real music and not the over hyped stuff played on FM radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish there were a four-and-a-half-star rating... 23 Mar 2014

…because I think some of these discs are first-rate, while some are less so. There are four CDs herein, and the middle ones are especially hokey with strings and other arrangements: bongos here, flutes there, etc. Sometimes that arranging gets in the way of Carmen's singing, or at least in the way of my listening.

But things clear out by the fourth CD, which is simply superb. Her voice is clear as a bell throughout; I wasn't too familiar with her sound, but this delicious dive into early work confirms what the addicts say about her being at the top of the jazz singers. Almost all of the cuts are standards, so you don't have to hack through lesser numbers. Definitely worth buying, and at this price, it's a pure steal.

(Another minor quibble: no ID on the 8-page booklet of who's playing on the various numbers. 6 of those 8 pages are devoted to advertising other CDs.)
