This is truly a unique, intelligent and atmospheric game. Other reviewers have cited that while this game is a first person game, it is not mindless violence and requires patience and skill. Indeed, at the higher difficulty levels, you lose automatically if you kill a human being, even in self-defense. Comparing anything in the Doom, Quake, et c. genre to Thief is like comparing checkers to chess. Beautiful fully animated movie sequences, amazing graphics, realistic human voices and accents (it sounds to me like Middle English, but I'm from the U.S. so I have only heard a little), and haunting sound effects all combine to form 15 intricate missions that will keep you occupied for a long time. The history for the character and the world he lives in (imagine a gothic Europe, only more... surreal) is at least as well detailed as the best RPGs. Additionally, this game has more plot twists than the best suspense films. In terms of game play, there is none better. Thief is thanfully non-linear most of the time and allows you to use many of Garrett's items as you see fit, there is no one way. There's so much to praise about this game but I'll just mention the realistic environment. Fallen foes don't disappear, and if their unconscious or dead bodies are found, the AI will get help and sound alarms. The AI is still not even remotely humanly intelligent but it is better than most games. Almost anything can be picked up and moved around, you make more noise on hardwood floors or gravel than on carpet when moving, bored guards sometimes chat with one another, healing is very slow and limited (as opposed sprinting over a medkit at full speed and being back to perfect health), et c. The only slightly bad thing I can say is that some portions of the game can be tedious, but just save your game frequently and you'll be fine. Lastly, this game is very creepy and tense at points. I highly recommend playing it at night in a quiet room with no light other than maybe a few candles. It shouldn't take long for you to be glad you aren't on acid. :)
