The various stages of Driver-inspired racing action loosely follow the plot of the film as Croker brings together his dream team of dodgy geezers and sets the stage for the most audacious crime of the century. Swinging London Town is the setting for The Italian Job's first chapter, and here you'll get used to driving some of the game's different vehicles. These include swish 60s sports cars, limos, vans and, of course, those famous Minis. Most missions involve getting to a certain location before the time runs out, with the added complication of having to ditch any coppers that have given chase. As the story progresses you'll visit Turin and ultimately the Alps as Croker's gang attempt to make their getaway via a bullion-stuffed coach.
The Italian Job captures the spirit of the film well, with a voiceover from none other than celebrity Michael Caine-impersonator Phil Cornwell. The graphics, while lacking the polish and sophistication of Driver, are authentic enough, and the jolly soundtrack complements the action rather nicely. However, while dedicated fans of the film will love the obvious care and attention that has gone into this adaptation, other gamers may be a little disappointed by the shallow gameplay and lack of levels. While the sub-games that involve racing to checkpoints or running over traffic cones provide some extra value for money, ultimately there's little here that hasn't already been featured in other PSone driving games. --Tim Cant

Not as Bad as the reviews say,

This review is from: The Italian Job (PS) (Video Game)
I really liked this game. It makes a change from listening to thumping monotone music and driving a sports car around a track half a dozen times.True, it's not the best game in the world, but it's does what it sets out to do, it's fun! While I appreciate that the hardened gamers would find this 'too easy' perhaps, there are some, like myself, who like to have a bit of a laugh and the 'Michael Caine' voiceovers, not to mention the wonderful re-enacted scene's from the film all add to a game that's not to be taken too seriously. You drive just about every vehicle that featured in the film, including the coach, and have to complete various tasks before 'doing the job'. Watch out for the police or mafia though. Throughout the game you listen to the theme music from the film itself, which because I'm a fan anyway, I must admit didn't grate on my nerves unlike some other driving games music which I usually turn off after a couple of minutes! I have a friend who has no interest in the normal driving games, preferring footy, and yet sat down and actually played this for hours. Great fun.

A Great Game Which Has Stuck Very Closely To The Film,

This review is from: The Italian Job (PsOne) (Video Game)
Previous to buying this game i had watched the film of 'The Italian Job' on video and i really enjoyed it. When i heard that there was a game coming out, i decided that i had to get it. Almost as soon as it hit the shops i had brought a copy and soon i was zooming trough the streets of Turin. To be honest, i had had my doubts about wether the game would still closely to the film or just go off on some other tangent. Thankfully it was almost exactly the same as the film, voices and all. The graphics are suprisingly good and definately one of the best games (in terms of graphics), on the PS1. You can unlock up to thirteen different vehicles and use them to drive around five different game modes which provide some great extras to the game. They are as follows: The Italian Job mode, which could also be called 'Story Mode' and that is where the main levels are, which you must complete in order to unlock the different cars. Free Ride mode, is where you can use any of your unlocked vehicles to drive around and explore the map in detail. This helps you to become more aquainted with the city which you are in, thus helping when it comes to the missions. Checkpoint mode, is where you have a series of checkpoints which you must reach in the time given. Each time you go through one, more time is added to the clock. Destructor mode, is where you have to use your car to drive through a long line of cones. It gets incresingly harder as the cones go round different streets and allys. Challenge mode, is where you are basically given challenges which you have to complete. Finally, there is one 'extra' mode which is called Party mode. This allows up to eight different players to battle against each other and test their skills at driving. There is some really great music on the game which helps you to complete the level. Be warned though, you will not get the tune out of your head. This is a great game all round really and the fact that it sticks to the film very well, makes it that much better. If you have seen the film and liked it then this is a great game. Also if you are a fan of driving games then this is a must-have. Buy it an you will not be dissappointed.
