Product Description

Official PlayStation 2 Magazine

"Affectionate film tribute that's more stealth than action. A tad clunky and genteel, but a jolly good show."

Computer and Video Games Magazine

"A flawed but entertaining action adventure. Varied for a movie license, and packs a hearty challenge."

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREAT ESCAPE, 21 April 2004
This review is from: The Great Escape (PS2) (Video Game)
Where can i start? This is my favourite PS2 Game of all time because ofthe following reasons. The game has a plot, which involves you playing asthree or four English, Austrailian and American escapees all capturedduring war time Germany. Theres a long list of levels and one of theunique things about them (Apart from photo realism graphics, great gamplayand AI intelligence etc), is that once you escape, that's not it, no sirree! You actually get to do the whole escape, that includes catching thetrain out of Germany or by plane or what ever...
Theres somany possible ways of escaping. You can go under the wire, over the wire, around the side of the wire, walk out dressed as a German Prison Officer, well, the possiblities are endless. All of the events are based on realhappenings by soldiers in World War II, ie: the all famous motor bike rideetc. This time your not completly helpless if your spotted against aguard. In the older German Prisoner of War games, if you were spotted, youcould only surrender, or run off and end up getting shot. Well, here youget to pick up any weapons which you find lying around, sneak up behindpeople and strangle them or pickpocket them. My favourite action is thepunch action. It's great fun. When your confronted with a Gestapo memberscreaming at you, looking all smug, it's great to just land him onestraight in the kisser. It is an ABSOULOUTLY AMAZING game and is wellworth looking into.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!, 5 Sep 2003

DC (REDDITCH, WORCESTERSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Great Escape (PS2) (Video Game)
After reading a number of reviews in magazines etc the average mark seemed to be roughly 7/10. I was reluctant to buy the game at the full retail cost of £39.99 but finding this on Amazon at the bargain price listed, I decided to take the plunge. You will not be disappointed, yes the character graphics are slightly blocky but if you see past this you will realise that the game has a lot more to offer. The sound effects are excellent, and I've found the movements of the character unique and easy to follow on the controller There are three different levels to play the game on, if you are finding it too easy then change levels. There are four different characters to adopt throughout the game, so enough to keep you going. It is intelligent too and just like the film you can easily be picked up by searchlights and stray footprints for instance. Guards tend to follow pre planned routes in camps but do pack an element of surprise when they can enter huts and find you missing. One mission may have 20 tasks, and tasks can be very simple to tricky. Like the film all of the charactors arrived at the 'main' camp after trying rigorous escape attempts. It's these escape attempts you try first before being shipped to the main camp. As the German General put it 'all the rotten eggs in one basket'

To conclude, this is well worth a purchase as the price is excellent. Look beyond the some of the character graphics and you'll find a well presented game that doesn't frustrate, short snappy tasks far out weigh long boring missions some games have!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Great Escape, 11 Jan 2005
This review is from: The Great Escape (PS2) (Video Game)
I got this game when I bought a PS2 as my main Christmas present. It is a very fun game to play as you control 4 different characters each with their own skill. For example, one is a lock pick and the others are all important to your escape.
There are many levels which require a lot of skill and stealth to get past the guards. You engage in frantic shoot-outs in Luftwaffe airfields, heavily fortified towns and even on top of a moving train!
You also get to use a variety of different weapons from bazookas to sniper rifles. You command a variety of vehicles including a tank and motobikes.
I would recommend this to any keen gamer as it is very addictive and hours of fun is guaranteed.
Good Luck my fellow gamers in escaping to your destiny.
P.S You don't need to have seen the film to play the game!
