Product Description

The Pyramids, the Sphinx and the tombs of the Pharaohs are all fabulous monuments to Egypt’s past.

But according to one scientist, Dr Sarah Parcak, the astonishing antiquities already discovered could be just a tiny percentage of what was left behind by the Ancient Egyptians. She believes that cutting edge satellite technology has the power to locate thousands of possible ancient sites, including what might be lost tombs, temples and cities buried beneath the shifting sands.

This breathtaking programme follows her journey, and sets out to recreate lost monuments and landscapes last seen of thousands of years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! 5 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase
What happens when you take a modern tool (satellite telemetry) and point it down over the sands of modern day Egypt? Revealed for the first time are buried cities, ancient pyramids, and all manner of insights into ancient Egypt. Dr Sarah Parcak is a congenial and expert host, and her discoveries are nothing short of breathtaking. Anybody with an interest in archaeology will love this new addition to the BBCs long history of superb documentary making. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the Sands 23 Aug 2011
Describes a fascinating use of space-age technology in uncovering hitherto unknown structures in Egypt. The use of satellite images with infra red filtering shows in great detail archaeological sites that would otherwise have remained hidden beneath the sands, probably forever. The DVD will be of interest to anyone who wishes to know more about advances in archaeological techniques, about archaeology in general or about Egyptian history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Egypt's Lost Cities 21 Aug 2011
A fascinating dvd. Watched on TV and then bought the dvd for school as I teach 'The Ancient Egyptians' to Year 3. The idea of space archaeology is amazing!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad choice of presenters 8 Aug 2013
By Terry A
After looking forward to seeing this groundbreaking documentary I was dismayed to see the BBC portray this in such a poor style . Comments from the presenters of "oh my god that's amazing" fall flat and sounded so rehearsed . I wanted to turn off the commentary as it got so distracting. At times it felt like the presenters had been plucked from a raffle to win a prize on a BBC docusoap . Sorry this was such a wasted opportunity when there are talented Archeoligists out there that could have done the presenting and made this worthwhile .
