Product Description

Review

If you are looking for a book to set the BM's redisplayed tomb paintings of Nebamun (Room 61) in context you could hardly do better than this sumptuously illustrated survey. --British Museum Magazine, Spring/Summer 2009

Product Description

Ancient Egyptian civilization developed its own highly individual manner of expressing visible and invisible worlds - earth and the domain of the gods - through distinctive 'languages.' These languages included two-dimensional portrayals (paintings and painted reliefs) and three-dimensional figures - both forms that must be skillfully deciphered in order to grasp their overt and covert meanings. Handsomely illustrated with 350 color plates, including numerous full-page details reproduced on a special matte paper designed to reproduce the feel of the stuccoed limestone on which the original images were painted, "Egyptian Wall Paintings" presents an art, language, and culture of extraordinary richness. The volume is also available in a slipcased version for those seeking an especially luxurious presentation for home or library. As the definitive treatment of its subject, "Egyptian Wall Paintings" is sure to appeal to art historians, Egyptologists, linguists, and connoisseurs interested in one of history's most complex and influential civilizations.

In case anybody else are confused about the two editions that Amazon shows, then ISBN13 978-0-7892-1008-1 (Egyptian Wall Paintings/slip case) is presented in a beautiful and sturdy slip-case while 978-0-7892-1005-0 (Egyptian Wall Paintings/cloth) is without the case.

In either case it is a beautiful and rewarding book. Probably the definitive study of Egyptian wall art.

Format:Hardcover
I bought this book as I'm currently studying Egyptian art, and I've been trying to find some decent reproductions to help me in my work. This has some of the best that I've ever seen, with amazing details printed on thick, matte paper so that you can even see the artists' brush strokes, corrections, guidelines and repairs. If you can't be in the tombs themselves, then this has to give you the best possible views of how the Ancient Egyptians created the amazing wall paintings (and some of the tombs, like Nefertari's, are virtually inaccessible now without pots of money and permits). Even if you can be in the tombs, then it can be difficult to see some of the views and details that are reproduced here. Added to this, the supporting text is informative, clear, and helps you to understand exactly how the works were painted, their materials, colours, what the paintings mean, and how they changed over the thousands of years of Egyptian history. Yes, it's expensive, but definitely worth the investment.

Don't be put off by the apparently high cost of this magnificent book, it is worth every penny. The quality of reproduction is absolutely superb - as another reviewer says, the thick matt paper and densely screened printing give an extraordinary illusion of actually looking at painted plaster. I took the classic Nile cruise earlier this year with only a generalist's interest in Egypt, curiousity rather than burning passion, but after seeing the beauty of the tomb paintings I wanted to know more and this is the ideal book. The illustrations are so absolutely gorgeous I haven't even started reading it yet, although I'm sure the text is excellent too. As the original paintings deteriorate with time, as I'm afraid they have been since their discovery, it is essential that as faithful a record of them as possible is made with each advance in technology. In even a few hundred years they won't be there with anything like the freshness experienced by C19th explorers - indeed much is already lost.

Thoroughly recommended to Egyptologists, art historians, laymen and women, or just those who have had a glimpse of the glories of Ancient Egypt and want to see more. The tombs are very crowded now and there is pressure to get through quickly. How marvellous to be able to sit and enjoy this beautiful expression of a civilisation unhurried and in comfort. Abbeville Press; I'm going back to Amazon to see what else they do!
