A wasted opportunity,

Having read and enjoyed Storm Constantine's previous work ("Bast and Sekhmet: Eyes of Ra"), I really expected more from this. The book purports to present an original Egyptian system, where each month is "ruled" by a different Ntjr or supernatural being: Toth for September, Horus for October, the Sphinx for January, etc. This is said to have been extracted from original sources in Dendera.The attributions for each sign, however, were done using questionnaires filled by contemporary people, and then processing the answers. The results reflect that old saying of "Lies, darn lies and statistics". They are quite washed-out, and for each of the zodiac descriptions I read, I could have said it described "me" with as much certainty as any of the ones I read before. There was no "a-ha!" moment, and each of them seemed to have been written to be as generic in its description as possible. I also object to the inclusion of Cabbala attributes for each sign, basing this on the supposition that Akhenaton created the system, and as such, would be relevant. The only interesting parts I found, and the ones that warrant the extra star in the rating, are what Storm calls "workings", that describe what is basically an invocation to the deity or being in question, one for each sign. But if you are building your relationship with the Ntjr, you are already half-way there, and could have easily written these yourself. In short, if you are looking for something that might enhance your understanding of Egyptian culture, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for the astrology flavour of the month, you might enjoy this book.

In the prelude/introduction, the author states herself that she made the system up. It's not authentic by any stretch of the word. True egyptian astrology was entirely different- go look it up instead.
It's an amusing read, though, and you can tell the author did put effort into making it, but seriously... not worth buying. I got it as a gift. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

Dear Readers,
This book is a rare gem, a "goldmine" of information on the Egyptian Horoscope. I thought that our horoscope that is in our newspaper or in magazines was all she wrote. After my trip to Egypt, I saw the Egyptian Horoscopoe on Hathor's ceiling at Her temple at Dendara. How beautiful, but different than the one I am used to seeing. So, I went looking for a book on the Egyptian horoscope. After buying several, I bought this book. This was the one! This book has it all. This book is really interesting because it explains the basic Ancient Egyptian sun sign astrology and what the attributes of each sign are.
In addition, it explains what each sign is like as a parent, child, or lover. It also details corresponding stones, colors, animals etc. for each sign. Wonderfully mind expanding for astrologers and all interested parties. |
