Review

"...an absolute must for anyone planning a visit to any of the sites in Egypt, and an ideal on-the-spot companion"
--Ancient Egypt, October/November 2005

"...an excellent companion ... by the authoritative Roger Bagnall and Dominic Rathbone."
-- Daily Telegraph, 28 January 2006

Product Description

The thousand years of Egyptian history from Alexander the Great to the Arab conquest (332 BC-AD 641) are rich in archaeological interest and well documented by 50,000 papyri in Greek, Egyptian, Latin and other languages. But travellers and others interested in the remains of this period are ill-served by most guides to Egypt, which concentrate on the pharaonic buildings. This book redresses the balance, providing the necessary background to appreciate the wealth of temples, tombs, villages, churches and monasteries of the Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique periods. Written by a dozen leading specialists, it reflects the latest research, both in the field and in the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars History and Travel Guide, 17 Dec 2005
By Kenneth A. Dailey "kadailey" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Egypt: From Alexander to the Copts (Hardcover)
This is an excellent work that thoroughly covers the Ptolemaic and early Christian eras, which are generally neglected, at least in comparison with ancient Egypt and Islamic periods. An example of why I enjoyed the book so much: I was reading it this past summer in Cairo, Egypt, read the section on Fayoum, went to Fayoum and used the book as a travel guide, discovered places I had not even heard about before. The book is very detailed in terms of history, archaeological evidence and discoveries, and is very specific about locations so that a visitor can use the book as a guide to find rare and out-of-the-way places. An excellent if pricey book.
