Amazon.co.uk Review

The hype is strong for Ego War. Trumpeted by the dance-music press as one of 2003's "next big things", London's Audio Bullys have been causing something of a stir with their fuzzy soundsystem beats, loud basslines and shouty cockney vocals. Debut single "We Don't Care" was a menacing musical manifesto; a loud, laddish, bass-heavy mash-up of house, dub, hip-hop and bassline garage that seemed to stick two-fingers up at perceived musical boundaries. Clearly, these guys mean business. The duo's much-heralded debut long player expands this manifesto further, taking in elements of ska, punk and electro. It's pretty good, too, mixing genuinely abrasive floor-fillers--"Real Life", "The Snow" (a disco-punk-house mash-up of epic proportions)--with more contemplative numbers (such as the wistful "Veteran" or "100 Million"). Sometimes they come on like the Specials jamming with Basement Jaxx with The Streets' Mike Skinner on vocals, at other times like Magnificent Seven-era Clash with Rob "Stereo MC's" Birch on vocals; only dirtier.

It's not a complete triumph--occasionally Franks' vocals can grate, and there's a certain "sameyness" towards the end--but it's certainly one of the most entertaining dance albums of 2003 so far. Here's hoping we hear more soon from these new heroes of "up-yours house". --Matt Anniss

I already had this album for ages but i finally saw Audio Bullys live on Friday night supporting Basement Jaxx in Glasgow and they were even better than on CD,alot more dancier live to be honest but the more i listen to the album the more i love it.
yeah they will get compared to the Streets but im not really the biggest fan of The Streets though to be fair Mike Skinner is very talented and a great ryhmer this is more for me.
Standout tracks for me are 'Real Life', 'The Things' and 'Ego War'.

Comparisons have already been made with the Streets and the Specials and Basement Jaxx and every band under the sun, well...maybe not One True Voice, so I'm not going to waste my time trying to persaude they are as good or better than anyone else.

It's suffice for me to say that, as a stand-alone album, it's one the the best purchases I've ever made. Period.

Each song is a winner and their eclectic mix of samples and kicking basslines make this one of the best albums this year by far. I've never really called myself a fan of this genre of music but Audio Bullys have certainly changed my opinion with this groundbreakingly original album.

Each track is powerfully catchy. Starting off with 'Snake' and '100 million' it never lets up. 'Real Life' and 'Face in A Cloud' are the stand-out tracks for me.

Well worth the money as it's gonna take something mind-blowing to beat this album.

With a mish mash of styles coming together to form a very tight and well produced album, the Audio Bullys have delivered one of the best and most original dance albums of some time. Everything is covered from house to garage, from hip-hop to dub, and not one track falls flat on its face when delivering. The solid production of each track means there are so many twists of style on this album that you really don't know what's coming next, and don't even have time to get bored. It is therefore this solid production style where the audio bullys really excel, and that sets this album out from the rest. The lyrics themselves, however, are another story.
Simon Franks, the lyricist behind many of the tracks, does indeed sound like a Mike Skinner wannabe. His impeccable delivery of the lyrics, married to whichever style the track happens to be, never fails to deliver, such as the performances on 'The Things' and 'We Don't Care'. However, the lyrics themselves often sound like they could have been taken from a short story written by a 13 year old. The two standout examples are that on '100 Million' ('But there are so many things I wanna do, mum') and 'I Go To Your House' ('Will she leave with me/Or will she leave with steve?'). Whereas The Streets deliver imaginative, thought-provoking lyrics that build a story in your head, Simon Franks often just sounds like a rebellious teenager, not really knowing which way to turn with the lyrics.
It is therefore the Bullys' non-lyrical tracks, where their production comes to the fore, that are the standout tracks on the album - tracks such as 'Real Life', 'We Don't Care', 'Face In A Cloud' and 'The Snow'. And when the Bullys' really shine is when they get the mix perfect - with lyrics that mean something and the production spot on, such as that on the aforementioned 'The Things'. And I do challenge anyone not to forget the title track 'Ego War' in a hurry, possibly the most catchy track on the album with an unforgettable instrumental and vocal hook.
All in all, 'Ego War' is a fine debut from a house act that we all shouldn't forget in a hurry. Audio Bullys have been heralded as the most exciting and original dance act to emerge since Basement Jaxx. With material like this you can understand how they have got this title. It's just a shame that the lyrics aren't up to much. With more experience, maybe the Bullys' can work on their lyrical skills, and surpass even this fantastic debut.
