Review

"Thank you for enabling me to have the type of birth I really wanted. Third baby at home and the first with no drugs" - Kath, Melbourne, Australia "I was able to have micronaps between contractions - I do feel the CD had a big part to play in that...I coped really well with the pain...I felt no anxiety through out the labour and indeed trusted my body to do the right thing - which it did. Many thanks" - Angela, London "Home birth in 3.5 hours! Very empowered. Growling, vibrated with noise." Brigit Eley

About the Author

Maggie didn't set out to become a birth expert - in fact, she's an unlikely convert. She was a busy international sales executive who only reluctantly attended a self hypnosis course to help her with her first birth. But she was blown away by the mind's ability to control the body's response to pain and 3 months later, she had a peaceful, manageable birth at home without so much as a paracetamol - to the surprise of her and her NHS midwife who said: "Maggie appeared to be 'sleeping' during most of her contractions, breathing slightly more deeply as they peaked. She used no pharmacological methods of pain relief and conducted her labour and delivery entirely under self-hypnosis. She appeared to experience no pain and very little discomfort." It was the turning point in her life. Inspired by her experiences, she trained to become a clinical hypnotherapist and left her job to pursue her new life goal: to teach other women the techniques which help them have a positive birth. The result was Natal Hypnotherapy(t), the UK's leading provider of hypnosis for childbirth. The philosophy is simple: to help women have a better birth. Maggie's work is revolutionising women's birth experiences by teaching them to overcome fear and work with their bodies during birth. Maggie says: "In our society, fear has become the overriding emotion pregnant women feel about childbirth - something fuelled by TV depictions and horror stories other mums love to tell. We have not been brought up to see birth as a positive thing, so we've lost confidence in our own ability to give birth naturally and so go into it fearful and anxious - feelings which cause much of the pain and complications in birth." The facts speak for themselves: Natal Hypnotherapy(t) users have an average caesarean rate up to half the national average and are recommended by 97% of users. Medical research has repeatedly found that hypnosis reduces surgical intervention, use of pain medication, mum's pain perception, and labour times. Maggie says: "This could revolutionise the way women give birth. If we could give every pregnant woman in the UK a Natal Hypnotherapy(t) CD to listen to we could save the NHS a fortune and change birthing culture!" It may not be on prescription yet, but Maggie's work is already changing the birthing world. Thanks to Maggie, effective birth preparation is no longer only available for those with the luxury of money and time. Her range of self-hypnosis CDs for pregnancy and birth, and new book "effective birth preparation - your practical guide to a better birth" are accessible for everyone, and designed to fit into a hectic life. From terrified teenage mums to women planning their sixth home birth, the techniques have helped women from all walks of life have a more positive birth. Today, Maggie has personally trained over 500 midwives, has a network of practitioners who teach the techniques in comprehensive workshops all over the country, regularly appears as a birth expert across the media, and has used the techniques for the births of each of her five sons plus helping in excess of 100,000 women have a better pregnancy and birth experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars So relaxing! 13 Jan 2009

I found this CD to be really helpful for relaxation. Track 2 is a 10 minute relaxation session, like meditation, and I try to do it daily in preparation for my home birth. It really does work and has helped me bond with my unborn baby already, and is a great way to get rid of pre-birth anxiety. Pricey, but worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 23 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I got the Self Hypnosis CD three weeks before my 2nd planned home birth and oh how I wish I had found it during my first pregnancy! It is just brilliant! It helped me relax every time I couldn't fall asleep at night or just needed a short "power nap" during the day. And it definitely helped me with breathing through contractions once the labour kicked in - I put it on my iPhone and listened to it on the headphones. I gave birth within 2 hours of the midwives arriving to assess me (I was 4cm) and everyone (including myself!) was amazed how calm and in control I was the whole time!:) It was a truly wonderful experience! Thank you Margaret Howell!:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 21 Jun 2014
Format:Audio CD
I listened to this CD every day from 32 weeks pregnant in preparation for the planned homebirth of my first baby. He had other ideas though and arrived 6 weeks early in hospital. Using the CD gave me 'permission' to relax which is so important in pregnancy and it helped me sleep better. When my labour happened I felt like I'd done it before-this must have been because I had 'rehearsed labour' so many times by listening to the CD. The labour was very fast and could have been overwhelming but the techniques were all in place without me realising it. I stayed calm and in control. The hospital doctor who saw me on admission didnt believe i was in labour, in fact i was 5 cms dilated already. I was happy and smiling almost the whole way through! When I lost a bit too much blood afterwards I stayed calm and relaxed and all was well in the end. I honestly think it was natal hypnotherapy that made the difference. I also used the same techniques a few years later with baby number 2, the labour was intense but manageable, and I loved it! I'd do it again tomorrow if I could!

This CD was the perfect supplement to my prenatal courses and natural home birth preparation before the birth of my second child. My first birth was extremely long (3-days) and very painful and exhausting. I was determined to find tools to help me manage my second birth and found Maggie's series on amazon. I listened to it (almost) daily about 3 weeks prior to my due date, and read the companion book. Even though I also bought the Relaxing Birth Music: Music for a Relaxed, Calm and Uplifting Birth CD and the The Labour Companion CD: for a Better Birth Experience CD, I never ended up listening to them during my labor because I was so comforted by Maggie's voice and message in this CD. I played it on repeat during my labor and it helped me tremendously. I can honestly say that it had a huge impact on my focus, breathing, visualization, and relaxation during my labor. So much so, that I didn't realize my contractions were intense enough to call my midwife. I managed my labor so well, that I ended up laboring alone (didn't wake up my husband), birthing at home (which was planned), birthed without our midwife (not planned!), and didn't need any other pain management (the birthing tub and tens machine were never used). My husband woke up as I transitioned and was able to catch our daughter. Our 3 year old son joined us shortly after the birth and we shared an unforgettable and unique moment together as a new family of 4. I would recommend this series to any expectant mother who is planning a medication free natural birth.

I laboured and gave birth without any pain relief using the techniques from this book. It was an amazing experience which included a trip to hospital where I had two canula insertions, a catheter and 3 VEs but just used the techniques to go through all those sensations. I am usually rubbish with pain and avoid things like leg waxing, the dentist etc. Things were clearly explained but throughout I felt like I could adapt to my own way of doing things too so it wasn't forced.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I bought this. 23 Jun 2013

The CD is really effective and the ladies voice is incredibly calming... so much so that I can't stay awake til the end most times I listen to it! The main track is based around a relaxation section to get you into a calm/hypnotic state and then they talk you through the visualisation of an ideal gently and natural birth. This prepares your mind an d body to enter the real experience with a similar calming and positive approach. there is also a shorter track at the end which just offers the relaxation/hypnosis section without the birth visualisation which I think I'll be using during the actual birth too. I'd recommend this to anyone who has had a negative birth experience already and therefore has developed a fear for childbirth or for first time mums who wants to enter their first birth experience in a positive and calming way.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for my perfect birth! 17 May 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I would strongly recommend the Natal Hypnotherapy for home birth CD. So many people have negative birth stories to tell but I am convinced that my birth went so well because I prepared effectively for it. The CD has a little pamphlet which is comprehensive but concise and gives you everything you need to know to help you relax and realise that we were perfectly designed to have babies!

I had the natural, home birth of my dreams without medication, after being terrified of giving birth after watching `One Born Every Minute'

I practiced with the CD almost every day for 8 weeks for either 40 minutes or 15 minutes depending on how much time I had. When I went into labour, I was very confident that my body would be able to birth my baby, just as my body knew how to grow my baby. I knew that my body was perfectly designed to have my baby, if only I would relax!

I listened to the CD when I first went into labour. I had my favourite chilled tunes playing in the background throughout my active labour and the lights in the room were dimmed with fairy lights creating a calm atmosphere. I used a special natural inhaler aromatherapy stick for help with childbirth too. The water was also invaluable but the self-hypnosis gave me absolute confidence that I could do it.

The Natal Hypnotherapy CD gave me a battery of tools to help me relax. Because I was well prepared and had practiced the techniques, these tools came to me easily and naturally when I was in labour.

There were several different visualisations that I used in conjunction with my breathing, for example I imagined a dial which could turn the intensity of the contraction down from 10 to 1. It gave my mind something to do other than panicking or focusing on the sensations.
