'Effective Child Protection is a significant contribution to child welfare practice and policy...Munro offers a pathway to achieving better outcomes for children and families who are recipients of child protection services' - Children and Youth Services Review

Praise for the First Edition:

`The book makes the fully justified claim [that] it will be essential reading for professionals undergoing qualifying and post-qualifying training. It is to be hoped that it will enjoy an even wider readership' - Child Abuse Review

This new edition is essential reading for anyone concerned with improving child protection practice. Building on the strengths of the first edition, it provides a deeper understanding of how practice judgements and decisions can be improved in child protection work.

Updates include:

- an account of how intuition, emotion, and analytic thinking are combined in practice

- an analysis of how the nature of the task determines what combination is needed

- an updated chapter on how we can detect errors

- new material on how organisations can promote good reasoning skills

- a simpler way to understand risk assessment instruments.

Illustrated with detailed case studies throughout, it will be invaluable reading for students, researchers and practitioners in all areas of child protection, including social work, education, health and policing.

Eileen Munro is a Reader in Social Policy at the London School of Economics, specialising in child protection. Other publications include Child Protection (SAGE 2006).

Review

`[A] well-written and stimulating book. ... Child protection professionals, teachers and researchers will find this a book that both challenges and helps the reader not just be a passive recipient, but an active contributor in their own improved thinking' - YoungMinds Magazine

`The definition of 'good child care social work' has been a contested one for several centuries. Enduring political and moral pressures have often obscured our understanding of what is helpful for children and their families; and have constrained the development of sound professional practice. Eileen Munro 's book performs a very valuable service in examining the context, purposes and operational requirements of effective child protection. Her analysis transcends short term panic-led responses and restores a welcome sense of proportion to the challenges involved in promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children. Social workers will find in this book, a range of reasoned, research based, and realistic pointers to good professional practice, set in a wide-ranging social and historical context. If they act on them, then children and families, with whom they work, might well get a much'- Professor Jane Tunstill

Department of Science and Political Science

Royal Holloway London University

`This book makes some interesting points... useful... for experienced and qualified social workers' - Peter Jenkins, Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy Journal

`It will be helpful for anyone with responsibility for deciding the child's best interests who wishes to re-appraise their approach to decision-making and to develop their capacity for critical thinking' - Community Care

`This book makes a vital contribution to better decision-making in child care and will be essential reading for social workers and others in child protection' - Simon Bass, Caring Magazine

`This book is written for anyone involved in child protection and child welfare work' - ChildRIGHT

'Child Protection workers from all disciplines and students will gain much from this book' - Community Practitioner --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ever book on Child Protection? 12 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
So, this may not be the best book to absolutely start your Child Protection Social Work career, but you *need* to read it. I have never read a better book on Child Protection that has changed my practice more, without exception.

This is a book grounded in reality, which has completely changed how I approach CP, how I write assessments, and how I make decisions. I feel that I have at least become a vaguely competent practitioner having read it, and it has given me frameworks for carrying out my work and making defensible, timely and informed decisions.

A must for every social worker. I may start buying it for every NQSW I have...

3.0 out of 5 stars OK 20 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as part of my Social Work degree, but there are better ones out there. This is quite hard going and not very well set out. Its got a lot of information in, but is better for someone who is going to use it on more than one occasion and is perhaps looking to go into the child protection arena.
