Disturbed by ever rising energy prices, I decided to have a closer look at the electricity usage monitors available on the retail market - from which there are many to choose! The efergy E2 and the OWL wireless monitors , the type that sample total electricity outputting from the house electric meter, were picked to evaluate as both appeared to be claiming market leadership and both had similar favourable reviews. The display monitors of each are incidentally, remarkably similar in appearance The price for both was also similar, and for no particular reason I ordered the E2. This model is capable of downloading usage information to a computer software programme. The goods swiftly arrived from an Amazon supplier and the, plainly, good quality items were inspected and, using the set-up manual, quickly installed. This is a very simple procedure that takes barely a minute or so, after a manual pre-read through. The sensor is clipped around the identified cable exiting the electric meter and plugged into the small, eggcup sized transmitter. That's that and the duo can be left together by the side of the meter and within the meter box - if you have one. The transmitter will have been previously fitted with the appropriate AA batteries. With the display monitor to hand - also now fitted with AAA batteries - a small button on the back and a button on the transmitter are pressed - the manual instruction is quite clear on this. It is a rapid and simple procedure. The monitor should now show a steady `wireless' emblem and a small LED indicator should flash on the monitor and the transmitter at about six second intervals. That's it! Job done! The monitor can now be placed anywhere within range of the transmitter (about 40m) in the building, and will display data as wished.Read more ›

I bought this and the Engage Network Gateway Energy Monitor to help me track energy usage in my new build eco home.

The products were well packaged and arrived promptly. First impressions were good, the quality of build seemed high and all the cables needed were included.

I had no problems setting it up and the enclosed instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Although I'm an engineer, I would suggest that any reasonably competent person should be able to set the e2 Classic up without any difficulty. It does NOT require messing with your electrics other than clipping the measuring clamp over the cable to your meter.

That's was the good news. Now the less good side.

The Elink software provided i with the e2 Classic is at best primitive and clunky and whilst it does deliver information it is not well designed or easy to extract data from if you want to do any kind of sophisticated data logging.

The engage web Platform provided with the network hub data logger is little better and seems unpolished and unfinished

What is very annoying (and difficult to understand) is that although you log in to one account (you set up a cloud account with Efergy when setting the system up) the different products in my system seem to have separate databases so for example, the Classic e2 Monitor stores its data separately from my Engage Hub Network Gateway Energy Monitor and I can't find out how to combine the datasets. Also, the the two monitors give slightly different readings throughout the day and are generally at least 200 watts apart.

Simple to set up and shows horrible high scores every time you boil the kettle or switch on an expensive appliance. Very happy with it.

I found this monitor very easy to set up and configure. I have economy 7 but I only needed the single sensor as supplied. However, the software on the disc did not work (Windows 7). Go to the efergy website and download the latest software then there is no problem. But do make sure the date is correct on the monitor. This gives a good record of my usage over several time periods. After watching the real time energy consumption on the monitor, I think this will pay for itself very quickly in savings.

The Efergy e2 Classic 2.0 offers a multitude of statistics and customisations about one's energy usage. It does the job, and it's great that it can give full historical details on usage.

The instruction sheet seemed fairly straightforward, and the harness went round the mains cable with ease. I bought this unit because the free Npower one I had didn't fit. Also this energy monitor is battery operated which I like, as it means I can locate it anywhere within range of the transmitter, whereas the old Npower one needed to be plugged into the mains (and ironically would use more electricity rather than helping me to save it)!

The only negative comments I would make are:

- The instructions for setting up a USB link to a Mac computer are terrible, and it took me two attempts to set it up correctly. I think the setup program really needed to be looked at, as it is not immediately clear that you have to install two other pieces of software beforehand, nor is it clear whether this other software works on a more modern Mac (I run OS X Lion 10.7);

- I bought this initially thinking that I could use it with my iPad, but have discovered that you need to pay for an extra module which costs nearly as much (if not more) than the energy monitor itself, which I think is a rip-off personally, and so will just stick with occasionally plugging it into my Mac and using the software on there.

I think if Efergy could look at the pricing for the add-on module to let you track its usage via a tablet or smartphone app, and reworked the Mac software, I would give it 5 stars.
