Product Description

The engage hub kit has been recommended by over 15 gadget sites (PC Advisor, among them). Engage enables you to see exactly how much electricity is being used in your home online and in real-time through the engage, our FREE online platform and our apps for Android, iPhone and iPad. By tracking your energy costs online in real-time, you can reduce your electricity bills and carbon footprint. The engage hub kit provides you with all you need to start monitoring your energy use through the engage online platform. Through this new technology it is now possible for you to view your home energy anytime, from anywhere! The engage hubs are simple to install and use. A small sensor is clipped on to the supply cables in your breaker panel. A lead from the sensor is connected to the efergy transmitter, which then wirelessly sends real time data to the engage hub. The engage hub is connected to your internet router via Ethernet cable. When you go online to our web portal or onto your smartphone app, the router wirelessly uploads your energy data and converts this data into kilo-watt hours. The web platform or app will then show you how much energy you are using in the same units that are on your bill. You can also see how much energy you are saving compared to other web platform users, compare energy saving tips, and set energy consumption targets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin 8 May 2014

Everything paired up initially without complaint. However, after a few days the connection between hub and sensor wouldn't persist. The simple solution was to move the hub only a matter of two feet and it hasn't been a problem since. I would have liked the Web site to cope with dual tariff electricity rates. The iOS apps claim you can do this, but it seems buggy as the price / unit rates that I enter never seem to stick. The statistics are great and it has given me a pretty clear idea of energy usage patterns over days and weeks. It's probably going to cost me more initially in terms of replacing bulbs with LED's and looking into investing in more cost efficient electric heating (apartment living means I don't have a choice). I'm sure it'll represent a saving in the long run. Thumbs up from me!

The GOOD:
- good product. easy to set up. simply plug it, connect to the web site and follow instructions
- efficient way to open ones eyes on how we spend electricity.
- Very handy to monitor electricity utilisation of your country home (but you will need to create a specific account - see below)
- better software than the competition for the same kind of consumer target and price.
- already bought 2 of them and another 3 that I gave as gift to family and friends (guys as girls do not really see the point of the whole stuff. possibly a geek stuff)

So overall the right product for what it says on the can. More demanding users please see below.

The LESS GOOD (demanding users):
- if you intend to use multiple hubs because you want to monitor multiple home you need to create multiple accounts (could easily be fixed but the promised software update is late to come)
- too bad the daily graph can not be scanned directly from the dashboard. You have to download an history file and then open it in Excel + formatting etc.... Messy and again could be avoided.
- if you really want to precisely measure electricity current then this is not the right tool (see you tube video that illustrate this). So good enough to get an idea but do not expect to be able to reconcile your cumulative utilisation against your meter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still assessing usefullness 28 Jan 2014

Have had this less than a month and am still assessing its usefulness

Easy to set up, but has to be connected to home network by Ethernet, no WiFi
Website is easy to access,
The overall noisefloor may be an issue though, as it means some activities cannot be noted
Clear indication of high use times, eg, kettle, tumble dryer etc, but harder to distinguish PC etc

There's a growing range of choice when it comes to gadgets to measure your electricity consumption. At the measuring end, they're pretty much all the same - a wireless sensor that clips around the live feed into your fuse-box / consumer unit. They've been pretty similar in the display side of things as well, typically an LCD screen that shows current and averaged consumption in KWh.

It's in the display that this unit differs. Rather than having an LCD display that you can glance at on your way out of the front door, it connects, via a LAN cable, to your broadband connection and uploads your data to a web-server. Once uploaded you can view, in near real-time from either a web-browser on your PC or an App on your tablet/smartphone. Configuration is simple. Log on to the Efergy website, it will detect the unit on your LAN and allow you to configure it. It took me less than 2 minutes.

By uploading the data to a server, a whole load more analysis becomes possible by comparing data over a much longer range of time. Both the app and the on-line dashboard allow you to look at real-time, 24hour, 28-day or 12month history views of your electricity consumption, either looking either at the raw KWh, a CO2 prediction or, if you enter your tariff details, your expenditure.

The graphics in the App and the website are all clean and easy to follow with colour coding to help you understand where consumption is highest and lowest. If you want to do more than the basic analysis that the website provides, you're also able to log on to the web and create monthly a monthly summary report with a reporting resolution of either minute, hour or day. Once created these reports remain available for download to enable comparison over longer periods of time.
