Product Description

Review

A real new-year pick-me-up comes in the form of beguiling São Paulo singer/songwriter Tulipa...her tropicália pop draws on 1970s roots, blissfully pretty melodies, convivial vibes, all served with 21st century spirit. It sounds like a global star is born. --METRO Music Extra - Who To Watch In 2011

...off-kilter arrangements, unpredictable chord progressions, and a wayward charm that has made me return to it over and over again...its sophistication is complemented by an admirable lightness of touch. --Independent on Sunday

Weaving mellow afro-samba flavours through a complex architecture of influences, from the Beatles to Eighties synth-pop, this latest offering from the São Paulo avant garde is further proof that the Brazilian megalopolis is one of the world s most dynamic musical cities right now. Gentle-voiced chanteuse Tulipa holds her own amid the wilful eclecticism with some exquisite melodies. --Daily Telegraph

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Claes Bengtsson on 29 May 2011
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Years ago I discovered Tom Ze and through him the huge musical scene of Brazil - so sofisticated, so diverse and inexhaustible. Here's another great artist; Tulipa Ruiz. The band behind her is on their toes, very tight and the music they create is not samba or bossa nova, not even nu bossa nova, no, no, no. It's pop. Pop with a distinctive Brazilian flavour and, thank you God, sung in Brazilian-Portugise (did I spell that right?)The music is written by her self or together with the guitarist/producer Gustavo Ruiz (husband or brother I guess). It's not smeary as Ceu, in fact it's not smeary at all, it's very honest, it has a musical heart. Or soul if you like. Yes, there are shades of soul, rock and sometimes a jazzy feeling and a brass section comes and goes and gives it a latin touch. But most of all; this is an awesome pop record. Listen!
