With an orchestration of tension that is always sharp and cinematic, M. J. Arlidge's debut novel grabs the reader by the throat (Barry Forshaw Crimetime)

Eeny Meeny is going to be as big as Jo Nesbo (Judy Finnigan)

It's amazing (Richard Madeley)

This taut, fast-paced debut is truly excellent (The Sun)

A macabre, theatrical thriller that gripped me with every twist (Woman and Home)

5.0 out of 5 stars EENY MEENY - Compulsive reading 16 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have a vicarious envy of readers who sit down and read a book in one sitting, something I've never had the time to do. Except this book has been an exception. I couldn't put it down.

The character of Helen Grace was well constructed, a wounded DI is no stranger to crime fiction, but hers was deliciously different from other contenders in terms of her method of self-punishment and self-loathing. The supporting cast of Charlie and Mark were also exceptional, and the author did a good job of manoeuvring their passage throughout the book until the end. Great, strong characters throughout. Well Done.

I can easily see this being snapped up by TV execs looking for a new angle on the police drama series.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Will NOT Be Bored ! 24 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
LOVED this book. It was a terrific story and totally gripped me AND it was set locally to places I've lived or live now which also makes it more interesting as you can picture the distances and the places mentioned so invest more in it. I can't wait to read her follow-up which I've heard on Goodreads is even better !! Blimey.....
I'd wondered at how the author thought up some of this stuff as I'd assumed it was a lady author but then found on here it's a guy. Sexist, I know, but I wasn't so shocked then !! I suppose you assume blokes are more likely to think up torturous tales !!
There WAS an irritation-the Americanised spelling throughout. This is a book set over here by a British author so spell in English !! At one point I don't believe Anna would have been thinking the thoughts she did either, knowing what we did about her. He also mentioned Ian Brady kidnapping truant children which isn't something I ever heard. Aileen Wournos isn't spelled as Eileen, either.(I know my serial killers) !! At one juncture a red coat that had been discarded in a litter bin resurfaced somehow, too...I know, minor stuff but I notice these things.
I did titter at the odd lines in it, I have to say, despite some of the more dramatic stuff occurring. I am a little unsure whether I "like" Helen or not. She aggravated me the way she behaved at times. I'm pretty sure I'd not want to work with or for her. She just goes off and seems to do just what she pleases. Some of her personal habits I found a little unsavoury as well but that made for an intriguing character with a uniqueness as well so I can't be too.......prudish !! One of the murder locations was a stroke of genius, I thought, too. I liked both Charlie and Mark as well.
I kept thinking I knew JUST what was going on and who the bad/good guys were and I was satisfyingly wrong on each count. Read this-you will not be bored !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!! 12 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thought this was a fantastic murder mystery - best I have read in a long while. This novel gripped me after the first few pages and could not put it down - the end of the book was a race to the finish, and what was great was I had no idea who the murderer was until the end which made the ending even better. The end was rushed slightly, however that might just be because I didnt want the book to end!!

Reading the second in the series already and sad to know the third book will not be out until Feb 2015!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut! 6 Oct 2014
By Jennifer TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Young couple Sam and Amy, are hitching their way home in the pouring rain from a gig in London, where a number of cars had sailed past without a second glance. Soaked to the skin, they were just about to turn back when a van pulled over and they were offered a lift. Climbing into the warm, dry van they were even offered coffee from a flask.
Next thing they know, they wake up with pounding heads to find they are no longer in the van. Believing they have been robbed and dumped somewhere, they then realise they have actually been dumped at the bottom of a disused diving pool. There is no ladder and therefore is impossible to climb out of. All they have been left with is a loaded gun and a mobile phone which delivers a chilling message...

"Do you want to live?.... Well do you?"

I was gripped by this story from the first page as you can't help but put yourself in the position of the couple trapped in the diving pool with no means of escape. Imagine realising you will either literally starve to death or be shot by your companion? Would you take your only chance to live and kill your partner before perhaps they kill you? The author gives a good insight into the minds and thought of Sam and Amy as they consider their options.

As other victims are put into similar situations, all faced with the same terrifying choices, the author really gets into the minds of all the victims, and this, along with the task for DI Helen Grace and her team to find out who is responsible, makes this book quite a page-turner.
The story is both dark and clever and makes for chilling reading at times. I like how the mystery and suspense is maintained throughout and I thought it was definitely building to a terrifying climax.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a series 21 Nov 2014
By Best Crime Books TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another book, another series, I just love it. A couple of my followers kept mentioning M J Aldridge and I relented and brought another book to add to the ever increasing to read pile. I’m very glad that I did as I read this and loved it. DI Helen Grace is a great character with some serious issues. These are highlighted from the start and it made me more intrigued about her. In addition to Helen we meet her two colleagues Mark and Charlie. Mark has his own issued and Helen does everything she can to keep him on the straight and narrow. Meanwhile Charlie is just trying to find her feet and prove herself to her boss Helen. All three characters were really engaging and highly enjoyable to read about.

The storyline was extremely catchy with murder victims being taken in pairs and left to die alone, hungry and scared. Their only choice is kill or be killed. The body count is high and it seems that there is more to this plot line than first meets the eye. Helen Grace seems to be very much at the front and centre and slowly more and more layers of Helens life are revealed leading to many question in my own head, as well as wondering who on earth would want to do that to her.

The violence is pretty graphic and ramped up with the complications between the three colleagues I was hooked from the start. Although Helen was readable there were still a few unanswered questions about her even at the end of the book. Having said that, for a debut novel it was a cracking read and I have already gone on to start book 2. I think this is a series which will definitely get better and better and the author clearly likes to reveal titbits rather than fling all the character info in within the first book. A definite recommendation from me and I can’t wait to get started on book 2!
