Product Description

Product Description

Edwin Spencer is the odd one out in his family. While his sisters and brother are high achievers (if decidedly uncool) he struggles at school and is happiest playing football with his mate Nat. Then the general boredom and misery of school is interrupted by a series of bizarre events Edwin starts to hear strange voices, and his science teacher of all people tells him that King Janus of Hysteria needs his help. As Edwin doubts his sanity, a whirling vortex appears in his bathroom! Before he knows it, he's been swept into a parallel world a world where they really need his help. If only Perpetua Allbright the school swot wasn't there with him... A brilliantly funny fantasy adventure from a talented new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Narnia" story for the 21st centure, 10 Aug 2010
This review is from: Edwin Spencer Mission Improbable (Paperback)

This is an excellent read, which will appeal to girls and boys alike. My friend's daughter described it as "brill" and "perfect for a rainy day read". The story has all the elements required to hold the attention - magic, mystery, wizards, quests etc - and reads like a Narnia story updated for the 21st century. Edwin makes an appealing hero, an outsider in his own family, who gradually discovers self confidence and unsuspected depths of courage during his adventures. His character is balanced by his female companion, Perpetua, witty and clever but who learns important lessons about modesty and being a good friend. The dialogue is genuinely funny and the book would appe;al to anyone between the ages of 9-13. Are there any more Edwin adventures in the pipeline?

Review by Elena (aged 12):

My mum bought this book for me, my sister(she's 8), my two cousins (aged 7 and 9) and my best friend (also aged 12). We all thought it was a great, fun read - as did my mum (and she's 47!!).

This book is perfect for you if you like Adventure, Fantsy, Comedy, a touch of magic and using your imagination!!

Edwin Spencer Mission Improbable is all about a boy (Edwin) who is pulled into this portale and lands in a magical land and.......................... well youll just have to read the rest now wont you!!

In conclusion I think that 'Edwin Spencer Mission Improbable' by the amasing and lovely 'J.D.Irwin' is a NO.1 book for 8-14yr olds and im defently going to read it again!!

Thank-you for reading my reveiw I hope you found it helpful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mission Enjoyable, 1 Mar 2010

I'm not a nine year old but I still really enjoyed this book! A good story, well written with humour and a cracking, unexpected twist at the end that I really didn't see coming. Edwin's a realistic hero with all the worries you would expect of a small boy transported to a parallel universe and asked to save it! Some grown up themes and a bit blood thirsty at times, but overall sensitively and appropriately handled for the target age group. In fact, it was quite refreshing that some of the characters were not all that they seem....I hope Edwin and his friends have more adventures in the wonderful world of Hysteria.
