5.0 out of 5 stars A complete surprise... 19 May 2011
I started DE shaving only a month or so ago as no matter what cartridge razor and shaving gel I used every shave led to irritation and bad skin. In my trawl of the internet to find a solution I found a couple of forums that extolled the virtues of traditional shaving methods - I thought I would give it a go as it couldn't be any worse. Initially I was worried that I would hack my face to pieces, but that wasn't the case. I got a few nicks to start with but as my technique improved I have found the razor to give a smooth, close shave - and best of all irritation free! I now shave daily (when before I had to 'rest' my face once or twice a week to let irritation calm down) and the skin condition of my face has improved no end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to use this classic 2 Nov 2010
I converted to DE shaving before using Wilkinson Sword Blades Classic Double-Edged Razor +5 Blades thinking that this value approach was justifiable (and it is). However this beauty is in a different class. It is a little smaller and therefore easier to use. The quality of the workmanship is superb and the shave with the Derby blades brilliant, closer and somehow effortless. The weight is good (not too light), balance great and I like the smooth unlined handle. Highly recommended with a good shaving cream and brush Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Screw Tread Pot 150gr. It's time consuming but more pleasing than clogged x5 razors. Enjoy

Assuming you know all about DE shaving, then let's get into the product itself.

This is a 3 piece, Mild Safety razor and it comes with 5 Derby Blades.
The chrome finish looks sensational, but it does become water marked very quickly, and you can lose a lot of time if you want it it to remain shiny.

With proper prep, the DE89 takes a week of heavy beard off with no tugging or pulling - your facial hair just melts off.

With a typical 3 pass shave, this get's just a good a shave as a cut throat. To explain: I am a hairy beast and if I shave before bedtime, then I am still clean shaven in the morning. Yes, it really is that close.

If you have any questions on the razor and / or DE shaving, then please go ahead and ask: I only made the transition to DE shaving this year, and I'm really thankful that people online were able to share their experiences and encouragement so that I was able to make the change.

5.0 out of 5 stars A learning curve worth taking 7 Mar 2012
Several reasons made me decide to buy a safety razor after using disposable-head multi-blades for 30 years. I was getting increasingly fed up with the ridiculous push for more and more blades per head; I was becoming uncomfortable about the plastic that would end up in landfill; and I was attracted by the idea of creating a shaving experience that felt a bit classier and more rewarding. It's one of the few 'grooming' acts most men do, so why not make it feel more significant than a quick squirt and scrape?

I chose this razor after mooching around forums such as Badger and Blade to get a feel for what was out there. Many people like this model and given that it's so affordable I gave it a go. Also, I already had an Edwin Jagger Best Badger brush with chrome handle, so I now have a nice set, though that was of secondary importance to getting a razor I'd enjoy using.

Well, I've been using mine for about a year now and I've not been disappointed. Those who, like I was, are used to lightweight multi-blade razors will find this weighty in the hand. At first you might feel that it's unwieldy because of this, but you get used to it very quickly and find that you can let the weight of the razor do the work. There's definitely a technique to be learned given that there's no swivel head, but it's, ahem, all in the wrist action and it doesn't take long to relearn your face and its contours in order to get a great shave.

The only one-star review on here (at time of writing) complains that the plain chrome handle is slippery, but I have no problem with it at all. My hand and the razor is wet throughout and I've never felt that it will slip from my grasp. After all, the primary reason we have fingerprints isn't to link us to a crime scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars What was once a chore, is now a pleasure 3 Jan 2014

I don't consider myself to be particularly tight with money by any means, but in recent years I have become increasingly irritated at the price of 'cartridge' razor blades manufactured by the leading brands. I won't name them - we all know who they are, but one year the blades will have three cutting edges, the next year four, and I believe we may now be up to five, with lubricating strips and even 'oscillation' if you really want it, though I've absolutely no idea why anyone would need five blades (or indeed, oscillation) in order to achieve a clean, close shave.

For me, these blades are now right up there with ink jet cartridges, spectacles and greetings cards as one of this country's great rip offs. Made for pennies, sold for whatever the customer will stand. Well I've decided to stand it no more.

So, rather than pay around 15 for four blades, I began to look for alternatives. It was at this point that I stumbled (stubbled?) across Double Edge (DE) razors, badger brushes and tubs of shaving cream and soap. In short, exactly the tools I remember my Father using to shave. Most of the reviews were highly positive - not only for the products on offer, but for the overall shaving experience.

I settled on the Edwin Jagger De89bl, as I didn't want to skimp on something that I planned to use for many years, and was hugely impressed with the number of five star reviews on Amazon. To complete my set, I also ordered a badger hair brush and some Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender Shaving Cream - also from Amazon.

The razor is a thing of real beauty. Gleaming chrome, slightly smaller than I'd imagined, but with a highly pleasing weight.
