5.0 out of 5 stars "Opulence and Grandeur", 15 Feb 2009

"The Edwardian era, like London itself, is a concept of which the boundaries are indistinct and uncertain." Thus does MH Port (Emeritus Professor of Modern History at London University) begin his three-page introduction to this fabulous atlas. The book is the latest (at the time of writing) in the series of A-to-Zs of historical atlases of London produced by the publisher Harry Margary and the London Topographical Society. This edition is even larger than the others, at 36cms tall and 27cms wide. But not only that, it is in colour!

The atlas is a c.1912 revision of Bacon's atlas of 1888 that had been set out in the previous `A-Z of Victorian London'. It is printed on glossy paper in its original colouring. Its scale is four inches to one mile and it covers an area from Harrow Weald (NW) to Woodford (NE) to Chessington (SW) and Farnborough (SE). From the view of the River Thames, it flows from Hampton Court to Plumstead Marshes. This huge area is spread over thirty-four double sheets. The underground railway lines are marked.

MH Port's introduction comments on the city's expansion at this time, with over seven million inhabitants in the London area in 1911. He notes the new parks, even the new golf courses that sprang up around the built-up area. There were of course changes in central London too, with "opulence and grandeur" a key theme with new boulevards at Kingsway and Aldwych, and new structures, such as Tower Bridge, Whitehall, and the South Kensington museums.

Before the atlas proper there are a series of special maps. So to begin, we have seven maps of the Home Counties (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent, and Surrey). These are then followed by thirteen thematic maps that often expand beyond the city into neighbouring counties. These cover such topics as postal districts, water and utility supplies, and court divisions. And, as if that were not enough, the atlas comes with the original facsimile index and - sign of the times - a list of the principal London clubs.
