The character of MacDowell's Woodland Sketches is gentle and intimate. Nothing ever gets too rambunctious. He even dared to bring Uncle Remus into the mix. WHile Joel Chandler Harris' famous story teller isn't exactly common literary territory now, the character still has a strong place in history (even if an awkward one.)
This issue takes the entire set and offers it twice, first in a gentle and excellent orchestration of the pieces and then in their normal piano guise. The notes aren't terribly clear who orchestrated the pieces (my only quibble), but the instrumental performance adds perfect colors to the composer's pallette. Only the second movement middies the musical waters. Easy listening indeed, without resorting to syrupy music. (The orchestra is mainly a string quintet with a variety of woodwinds.0
Highly recommended.
