Bought it for my 9 month old son when he started to stand & crawl. Works very well as play mat, buffer when he falls, even for chewing. We also have a larger 36 pieces mat (alphabet & numbers, also from Amazon) and they match. We combined the two and have a large play area now.

Cute mat 14 July 2009
By C.P. - Published on Amazon.com

This mat is 40" x 40". It comes packaged as 9 big squares with 12 edging pieces and 4 small corner pieces. It takes less than 10 minutes to put the mat together. It is almost an inch thick and provides good padding on the hardwood floor. I would say it provides better padding than my pottery barn wool rug, which is pretty thick. One of the squares has a mirror in it, and baby likes to look at herself. I also feel like it provides better traction for her learning to crawl than the floor or rug.

do not buy for the safety of your child!! 2 Sep 2011

HERE ARE THE LATEST UPDATES ON MAY 5th, 2011:
As of today we have become aware of a new concern around foam mat manufacturers and this leads us to personally believe that ALL EVA FOAM MATS are not to be trusted as healthy products. We would personally not have them in our homes because there just are not enough regulations. A foam mat can be riddled with formamide and a manufacturer and retailer can hide behind the claim that their product meets all safety regulations.
The following post contains information that we have been gathering for months, the following info suggests 2 companies may have undetectable levels of formamide present, but again, as of today we personally would not use eva foam mats in our homes. You must weigh your own concerns
The manufacturers of EDUSHAPE EDUTILES Foam Mats has requested we immediately remove their lab results from our site. We feel that this information should be easily accessible to all parents and that hiding this information is not right.
Because they want us to remove their lab results immediately, it gives us a very unsettling feeling about these mats. As a parent, how does it make you feel to know that you do not have legal access to these lab results?

Here is the site I got this from if you would like to check this out for yourself:

Great Play Mat! 14 Oct 2009
By D. Lagonigro - Published on Amazon.com

We bought this for my daughter for when she started sitting up by herself and crawling. She really loves it! She enjoys the cutout images that she can remove and play with by themselves and she also loves trying to take the mat apart. I love being able to point at the colors and reinforce their names and I love that she has somewhere fun and comfortable to sit and play. If I had the room, I would buy another one and connect the two together!

One thing that I wish is that it wasn't so annoying to wipe clean. There is a different texture on each square and, although it is great for developing sensory skills, this makes it difficult to simply wipe clean. You have to make sure there is nothing stuck in any of the grooves in the patterns. I also don't like that the musical piece does not have an on/off switch. We have accidentally set it off a MILLION times by stepping on it and it is very annoying!!

Dangerous- babies are able to bite through the material 9 Jan 2012

My 9 month old was able to bite a piece of this material out. He had a piece of this mat in his mouth big enough to choke him. I would not recommend this product. This is definitely not for babies who are teething.

Edushape Mat 7 Nov 2009

My grandson loves this mat. It is bright and fun. Be aware that "Small World" plays on one of the squares quite loudly and can't be turned down. I would highly reccomend this.
