The main topic of this book is to provide a holistic understanding of why technologies are used and not used in education, with the understanding of who uses technology, how education and learning is defined in this context, and how educators and society as a whole can better use technology. The book focuses on the way people have been introduced to new technology and what people do with the technology. The author does not focus on the technological devices themselves but does focus on the use of providing a better understanding of the definition of technologies used in education. Some of the subtopics discussed in the book include the introduction of new technologies in the past, how they have been utilized or not, and possible ways educators and administrators may be able to improve learning, especially concerning individual learning needs. Selwyn describes the premis that the introduction of the technological revolution and the subsequent technology will transform everything by the introduction of technology has not been reached as of yet. Another subtopic of discussion is the social context in which technologies and society as a whole view the use of technology in education.
Technology is defined by Selwyn on a basic level as, "the process by which humans modify nature to meet their needs and wants (p. 6)." Technology can be separated into different basic subtopics to include such things as paper and pencil. Technology is also defined in terms of processes and practices that help people develop skills and knowledge. Digital technology is the term used for modern technological devices including information communications and computer based systems. The focus of the book is on digital technologies in education. Education is defined by Selwyn as "the conditions and arrangements where learning takes place (p. 5)." The book's focus is on the educational system that includes the social context, economic circumstances, gender, class, race, political aspects of society, and social systems in education.
Selwyn does a great job of exploring the way technology has changed the way educators view technology while also providing ways in which technology can be better used for everyone. The book is a text and reads as such. This is not a light, bed time reading but a valuable sorce of information to educators.
