Review
Having read these two books [Popular Education Practice for Youth and Community Work and Using Theory in Youth and Community Work], I am of the opinion that they are essential texts for 1st year students embarking on a youth and community course. They offer the student a very clear route into understanding the theory that underpins the principles and practice of youth and community work. In addition it introduces students to key educationalists, such as Freire and Gramsci, making their work both understandable and relevant to current issues facing the practitioner today. I particularly welcome the activities in the chapters, as these give students the opportunity to apply their learning and allows for a more interactive environment. Finally, these texts are not only written in clear uncomplicated language but draw on contemporary events in society, which once again make the text a 'live' document that enhances the student experience and is a valuable teaching aid." --Lecturer, University of Worcester.
This text successfully provides an overview of theory and practice - particularly appreciated the focus on hegemony. The exercise sections are very useful. --Lecturer, Liverpool John Moores University.
Engaging text on emancipatory and empowering forms of community education. Well written and structured, yet accessible. --Lecturer, Darlington College.
