a course in performance practice 20 Sept. 2011
By Laurence Levine - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Eduard Colonne was a very popular conductor of his time. George Bernard Shaw praised his improvisational quality. Colonne was born five years after Brahms. These recordings, made by the acoustic process, during the first decade of the twentieth century are listenable to those used to acoustic records. The performances have to be heard to be believed. The two primary features are passion and extraordinary freedom (governed by exquisite taste).

We start off with Mozart with rubato and passion. Not too slow. Not too fast. The same aproach, but a little slower for the Beethoven Turkish March and Schubert's March Militaire. The Chopin may be too romatic for some, but is fascinating. Berlioz's Rakoczy March is stunning. It is swift , but with subtle tempo changes. The Wagner excepts (including the prelude to Act 3 of Lohengrin) are perfectly gauged. The Brahms Hungarian dances #5 & #6 are swift and free and passionate. The slow portion of dance #6 is not the usual dirge, but is just right. Nobody plays like this today. The rest of the items (sadly cut and rearranged due to 78rpm time restrictions)are played with trenchant poetry and naturalness.

This man makes our "great conductors" seem like time beaters. However, due to differences in sound quality and taste, I suggest you listen to excepts first before you purchase this. I love it. You may not.
