Product Description

Product Description

Editing a Better Book is primarily intended for authors wanting to self-edit their own novels, either for self-publication or prior to submission to agents, editors or beta readers. However, there are many aspects that may be applied both to non-fiction and to editing for someone else.

The book is divided into three sections, covering structure and plot, constituent parts such as characters and dialogue, and the technicalities of spelling, grammar and line editing.

The guide suggests corrections to look for and ways to identify them. It is suitable for use with both UK and US English.

More About the Author

I live in rural Devon where I am a singer/songwriter/guitarist and teach guitar, having moved down here for the solar eclipse and stayed. I have a degree in psychology (Sussex) and a masters in archaeology (Nottingham) and these subjects tend to crop up in my writing, whether fiction or non-fiction.

My latest novel, The Cat and the Cathedral (Book 1 of The Green Man Trilogy) is just published. It's a traditional YA mystery/adventure, suitable for age 12 upwards (including adults!). Contemporary, with just a hint of paranormal, it's set in real life locations in Exeter.
The Girl on the Swing is my debut novel. Set in Nottingham and Lyme Regis, it explores themes of past lives and regression, although it is not primarily a book about the paranormal.
My second novel, Cave, features scenes of underground exploration and draws on my own experiences of the sport. It is about friendships and relationships rather than disaster or terror!
Bloody Scared is a shorter book and is a humorous vampire spoof.

Editing a Better Book is my guide to all aspects of self-editing.
Archaeology Walks in the Peak District is published with Sigma (now part of Stobart Davies) is recently being published in a new edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money 16 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was eager to buy this book as soon as I read it was being released. It's exactly the sort of 'how-to' book I've been looking out for. I have to say it ticks all the boxes. If like me your novel is at the manuscript stage and you lack confidence in giving it that final draft then this book is for you. Not only does it delve into the art of self-editing, but it also covers the basics of good grammar as well as countless hints and tips on plot structure, character and the like. At seventy-seven pence this book is a bargain, I'm learning as I go and this book is helping me along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended 5 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Too many indie writers rush to publication, but so do writers aiming for literary representation in the mainstream industry, and I've been looking for a book on editing that I can recommend to those who seek my advice. This is such a book.

In `Editing A Better Book', Ali Cooper differentiates between the types of editing a typescript should be subjected to, and how to subject it to such without the writer going into emotional meltdown. Three sections are each split further for ease of understanding, with tips, examples and hyperlinks to useful grammar and punctuation checkers.

"Many people say you cannot edit your own book..." Ali Cooper says you can. With her leading writers by the hand, I whole-heartedly agree. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to aid their own cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful DIY Guide to Editing 1 Oct 2012

How to Edit a Better Book by Ali Cooper, published by Standing Stone Press for Kindle

Ali Cooper is an experienced author of both fiction and non-fiction. Here she shares her expertise in a concise, yet comprehensive manual that helps you to 'consider different aspects of your book in a methodical way', making sure that your writing is deliberate and consistent. These aspects include: structure, focusing on the plot, pace, narrative voice, characters, dialogue, continuity, plausibility and flow, and the nitty-gritty of grammar, punctuation and spelling, those homophones that escape the spellcheck, and even fonts. There are numerous examples and links. With plenty of good ideas and sound advice, this guide could help you to transform your manuscript from a raw diamond to a polished gemstone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide. 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good guide on how to edit your masterpiece. It is well written obviously Ali was following her own guidelines while writing the novel. I really liked the comment about saving edited versions so that you could see the progression of the prose. It is interesting and has changed the way I have thought about writing my book. There are a lot of sageful tips in there. A list of the characters, great idea. I always thought that was icing on the cake a throw back from Shakespear but now I understand how useful it is for keeping track of the characters. Especially the ones I want to bump off. Also the point about illogical surprises is handy. Set up hints as to what is going to happen to the characters is a good idea.

An excellent no nonsense book built in logical steps and very useful as a permanent pickup desktop readme reminder should you happen to be a writer practising the craft and if what the writer suggests is followed could save you a lot of time and money in editing costs.
