The Edirol R09HR is a fantastic sounding recorder. It has a rubber feal to it which makes it very easy to hold. The screen is large and takes up most of the front face. The buttons are all large and make a nice sollid click when you press them. As far as the sound goes, it is wonderful. It gives a good clear realistic sound. It has eliminated more of the hissing that the preamps on the older model had which makes it sound really good especially for its price. It can record in both wave and mp3 and the mp3 sounds better then it did on the R09. I like the mics, it may not have the widest stereo seperation but the internal mics are good at handeling wind noise. Another big advantage it has is the little preview speaker at the back. You are not going to get the loudest sound out if it, it is quite week, but for what it is intended for it does the job fantasticly. I would like them to get rid of the sound of the preamps more because if they can do that it would be almost perfect. I would recommend this to any one who likes recording any thing from music rehearsals to podcasts and much more.

There isn't really much to choose between compact recorders in this price range, but the Edirol R-09HR probably has the best sound of all machines in its class. Pre-amp noise has been improved over its predecessor, and good bass response provides warmth to the recording. If you want to improve on sound quality, you'll either need to get a larger and more expensive machine, such as the excellent Fostex FR2 LE, or use an external pre-amp and mics.

Build quality is also better than the earlier Edirol R-09. Line-in and mic inputs seem more solid, and are probably attached to the case this time, rather than just soldered onto the circuit board. But it still has a slightly insubstantial feel. The clear plastic covering over the OLED screen is fragile and the machine won't be resilient to drops and knocks.

The inclusion of an infrared remote control will be useful for podcasters or interviewers wanting to adjust input levels without causing handling noise. Battery life is about average for a compact recorder.

Not the first choice, then, for extended field trips, but a good purchase for the recording studio and the lecture hall.
