I'm not really sure what I was expecting with this book but I have to admit that I gave up after 400 pages. It is full of information on Edinburgh's golden age but I was exhausted by reading the hundreds of extracts from contemporary letters and journals - most of them commenting on other individuals. However, the index is useful and I suggest that the reader selects what they think will be of particular interest, rather than starting at page 1, as I did.
