About the Author

Beautifully produced, good ideas, but too imprecise for countryside walks,

This book is beautifully produced in every respect, with a good writing style, excellent typography and graphic design and great photos. It contains some fine and inspiring ideas for walks, drawing attention to a few relatively little-known paths, e.g. in Roslin Glen and around the Braid Hills.The big `but', though, is that the apparently detailed route descriptions (`Turn left into a small clearing and left at the next two forks as you descend') are actually very difficult to follow, often bearing little or no resemblance to the reality on the ground, suggesting a lack of `beta testing' on the part of the author. Also the maps in the book, though attractive and apparently clear, are not very precise. I assume that, if Ordnance Survey maps had been included, the book would be more expensive due to licensing fees. This does not mean that you'll get hopelessly lost when using the book, just that the walk may turn out to be slightly different, and less predictable in terms of finding your way, than the description in the book may lead you to believe. I have not used the book for any walks in town, and I suspect that it may be much easier to follow for these. This review is based only on using it for countryside walks out of town and in Edinburgh's hills. One final, very positive point, though: all of the walks are accessible by public transport, details of which are given for each walk.
