Book Description

30 May 2002
Edinburgh: The Capital Guide is not your usual guidebook. There are all manner of books that will give you a purely factual, or even advertorial view of the city. This is more like having a good friend, who knows the city well and is more than happy to take you around, show you the sights and give you the inside stories on places all around town. Written by Justin Anderson, an Edinburgh native, it not only has a chatty style that makes the read itself enjoyable, but is also full of personal anecdotes and asides. Of course, it still gives the information you need and with over 100 each of shops and restaurants and just under that number of pubs to choose from, you'll have more than enough of a flavour of Edinburgh to ensure an enjoyable time in the Capital.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relocating or visiting - a worthy buy 9 July 2004
By S. Yogendra VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I got a copy of this guide to Edinburgh from our hotel concierge, when I was visiting to buy up a place for our imminent relocation. Key positives over other guides as I continue to use it over the last few months: the editor doesn't try to sell anything through his reviews (there are paid ads for that!); well-organised along various parts of Edinburgh and along activities such as shopping etc. and well-researched since Anderson has visited every single vendor reviewed; funny and personal as it is peppered with anecdotes such as the time he got his wedding ring at the Tappit Hen and found so had his dad and grand-dad, where advance booking may be needed (Nargile!) and how Hanover St has had an Italian invasion, save for a grand Thai place called Muang Thai..

He writes like a local - which is a different approach from paid guides writing for other publishers. This helps as I wasn't just seeking toursity information but also locally relevant stuff. My experience shows his views are quite reliable. He is well-travelled himself so his views are not 'western view of exotica' and he is local so his view of Scottish things, which he doesn't promote (save for Anta) is very valid.

Highly recommended. A steal at the price. My copy somehow went with some guests who were visiting, so alas I finally have to pay to get a new one now.. tsk tsk..

A fabulous book. It is informative, funny, interesting and thoroughly absorbing. You want a tourist book that isn't touristy ... then this is the one you want!

Ten out of ten for Mr Anderson.
