I ordered this to extend the range of a BT home hub 3 (due to a large brick chimney in the centre of the house reception is patchy). I think of myself as fairly capable but not a technical wizard so I was a bit dubious about whether I would be able to get this working, having read a number of online comments offering help on setting it up as a repeater. I agree the instructions included with the item (hard copy and on cd) are pants if you just want a repeater - after a day or so messing about I came across a much more useful set from Edimax online. Here's the address for the benefit of anyone else trying to do the same:

http://www.edimax.co.uk/images/Image/FAQ/Wireless/EW-7228APn/EW-7228APn_URepeaterUsingWizard.pdf

I had a small amount of experimentation with the security settings to do but it's now up and running very well with good results. If Edimax had just given me these instructions in the first place I would give the 7228AN 5*, but have knocked one off for the installation time taken. Otherwise great value for money.

First - compliments to Shop4USB on quick and efficient order processing and delivery.

This is a good product - very flexible and configurable as a wireless device. Edimax is a less-well-known brand, but they have loads of products.
Small and neat and white - a pleasant change from the usual black.
I bought this to replace a BT Home Hub 2.0 that was being used as a wireless access point where the in-built 4-port 10/100 switch was giving under 10mbps throughput on the home network.

The Edimax box is about a third the price of more well-known brands, provides very good functionality, and took under 5 minutes to configure and get into a working state as a standard AP.
Another 5 minutes to find, download and install the latest firmware taking it to 1.07 from the as-supplied 1.03
All in all I'm very happy with the purchase - initial concerns about whether the low price would imply poor design or performance seem unfounded.
Only a couple of adverse comments:
The device has no logs facility - not a major omission, but something that can be useful and is almost standard.
The management interface has no 'Logout' facility to erase the security token in the browser, the browser must be closed to log out.

** Addendum as of 24Nov11 - found a technical problem **
For non-technical - if you have streaming media services on your home network that rely on UPnP as most do, the EW-7228 device does not fully support them.

For those techies amongst us:
Discovered that the LAN ports do not fully support the UPnP protocol - so media players on both wired and wireless clients (eg Windows media player, XBMC on Windows 7, Android phones) cannot find streaming media sources on the home network.
Edimax tech support are being quite responsive, have supplied a beta version of updated firmware that has fixed the wireless clients, but not yet for wired clients. The switch ports are not forwarding the multicast and broadcast traffic like a layer-2 switch should.
So my Windows 7 PC can no longer see my NAS box and other streaming services for videos, pictures and music.
I believe this will be fixed when Edimax properly understand the issue and update the firmware.

** Addendum as of 06Dec11 **
Edimax developers have confirmed that the design of the EW-7228 does not support the UPnP protocol, and a firmware update to fix this is unlikely.
This is quite a serious weakness these days due to the common use of streaming media on home networks.
If you connect your PCs or NAS box or UPnP-enabled TV via the LAN ports on the EW-7228, streaming of video, music and pictures will likely not work.

Firstly it didn't recognise it's own password. This is rectified by disabling the wireless on your computer temporarily.
Then i couldn't get the security to marry up ,so i turned off on my router, (Homehub 3) and got it working first.

Then go back into the router and turn the security back on and do the same with the Edimax.

It's going well now but i think they could have made the set-up quite a bit easier, hence only 4*

UPDATE - Only lasted two days before i had to do a hard reset to get it working again and this has happened 3 times in a couple of weeks so it's getting returned.
