Product Description

From the author of The Gone-Away World - an exhilarating espionage murder-mystery.

There has been a strange death in the quiet village of Shrewton: old Donny Caspian has lost his head. In the Copper Kettle tea rooms, Tom Rice, a junior nobody from the Treasury, puzzles over the details of the case. He has been sent by his superiors to oversee the investigation, but is he supposed to help or hinder? At the next table, octogenarian superspy Edie Banister nibbles a slice of cake and struggles not to become Miss Marple. But what is the connection between the two? Who killed Donny Caspian, and why?

Taking in Rice's present and Edie's daring past, from duels on shipboard to death in back alleys, 'Edie Investigates' is a superb short story from the incomparable Nick Harkaway.

Also included with this short, the first chapter of Nick Harkaway's long-awaited new novel Angelmaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nick Harkaway Intoduces Edie 23 Sep 2012
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This short story introduces us to Edie Banister, a former servicewoman/spy who happens to be in the vicinity of Tom Rice, a government official of sorts. Donny Caspian, a likeable banker who has helped Edie out in her younger operative days, is dead, almost certainly murdered, but the 'Agency' want it to be natural causes to avoid further investigation. Would be assassins are on the scene, the small village of Shrewton, intent on closing down anything that would incriminate them in murder or espionage. Rice is not equipped to handle the situation, but Edie in a derring-do fashion with guile, bravery and an unusual umbrella sorts things out. This is a lead into Nick Harkaway's full length novel 'Angelmaker' which is tremendous and features Edie. This short story contains the first chapter of the book. It is interesting, pacey with humour and stands alone in itself, with a variety of characters and a tight narrative. It would have been better if some of the loose ends, particularly the motives and circumstances of the murder had been tied together. The reader can probably work it out. Enjoyable nevertheless.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little more of Edie 27 Dec 2012
By D. Harris TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a short story featuring Edie Bannister, a character who features in Harkaway's longer novel Angelmaker. If you've already read Angelmaker you'll know Edie and will, I'm sure, welcome the chance to spend more time in her company, and to learn a little about why she intervenes as she does there.

If you haven't ready Angelmaker, this story doesn't give much away though it will tell you about Edie's background and abilities - and to avoid spoilers I won't say any more now, except that "Edie Investigates" is an interesting read in its own right, giving a flavour of the longer story - which you certainly should read.
