Book Description

1 Aug 1999 Easy Nature Guides

Prof. David Pegler’s concise, well-illustrated and informative guide is a timely antidote to the mythology surrounding the much misunderstood – and often maligned - wild mushroom.

The book begins with an introduction to fungi and mushroom biology, a mushroom calendar and a crash course in hunting for edible mushrooms, together with useful tables containing information on classifying and identifying edible fungi.

Twenty different varieties are then explored in depth – from the edible to the poisonous (and even the hallucinogenic!). Extensive photographs and colour illustrations will aid the amateur mushroom gatherer in the tricky (and potentially dangerous) task of identification. Finally, this fascinating book offers recipes and food preparation tips.

Pegler’s considerable expertise and clear delivery make the Easy Edible Mushroom Guide an absolute must-have for anyone new to the world of mushroom hunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need except the mushrooms 2 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is written and illustrated by experts. It has colour drawings, photographs, excellent descriptions and at 21cmx13cm is a good size to use as a field guide. As well as the edible fungi it has a section on the poisonous ones and some recepies to try after a hard day collecting. The only thing it doesn't tell you is where the edible fungi are. But that's a secret we all keep!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Still confused. 18 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There was a plethora of mushrooms and other fungi in my local area this year, so I bought this little book to identify the edible ones and supplement our larder. The book is terrific in that the photos and drawings are accurate, and the descriptions are comprehensive. However, after being informed how to recognise the edible fungi, the next information wisely points to the inedible and toxic ones. They are so closely alike that I am still confused and dare not collect any. So, no harm to the environment from me then. A good informative book and I recommend it highly.

Loads of pictures and advice - though we were still unable to identify many of the species we have in our garden. At least now we won't poison ourselves!
