I have two of these units and been using them with Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit Linux and haven't had any problems with them. The SiL-chip based eSata card that is included does suffer for highish cpu usage when reading from all drives, but that is a known issue and if I ever need higher performance I can just get better eSata-card which supports port multiplication. Already the two boxes are full and am planning to get two more. There just isn't many options unless you want to buy twice or more the price or then you have to do with 5 bays or less. Also the blinken lights in the front are nice.

The current Amazon 3rd party seller seems to be wanting far too much.
The actual DAS is great if you're willing to use linux (such as the openfiler NAS distribution)
You can flash the included card to be non-RAID and just use software RAID which gives plenty of advantages (given the included card is obviously not a proper hardware RAID card anyway)
The only minor gripe is the fans in it are fairly noisy, but given you're putting 8 drives in it, this isn't going to be a major problem for most.
Performance seems adequate for a file-server on a gigabit LAN, mine varies from 40-90MB

I have had countless problems trying to get this to work on PC.
1) There is a recommended list of Hard Drives they would have you use, which is now outdated.
2) The unit is totally incompatible with Samsung Spinpoint F1 1tb drives, and for that matter a few others that i had tried
3) There is no tech support at all,i`ve called their helpline, emailed the tech support.Had no communication at all

There are people that have just put hd`s in and off they went, however there are as many that have serious problems
such as i have.
Cheap isn`t always best.
