Product Description

The early 80's is now a quarter of a century ago! Whilst there have been many 80's compilations we feel now is a good time to release an `edgier', cooler tracklisting highlighting some of the artists and tracks that may not be as familiar, but still defined the times. Many of these tracks have only previously been available on vinyl.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it says 19 April 2008
By Leigh
Format:Audio CD
Although undoubtedly the best compilation of eighties music I've ever found, the track lisitings are not the same as Amazon state.
On disc 1, we have no Haircut 100, but instead Marilyn's "Calling Your Name" - I suppose Marilyn was typical of the eighties scene, but he was also a pretty lame one-hit wonder. Still, Haircut 100 turn up on Disc 2. Unfortunately, the Cocteau Twins do not - a great shame, as "Pearly Dew Drops Drops" is one of their best. Also, there is no SPK on Disc 2, but there is Aztec Camera's "Oblivious" - perfect eighties pop. And on Disc 3, we have no Scritti Politti or Talk Talk, but instead have Teardrop Explodes' "Passionate Friend" and Altered Images' "See Those Eyes".

So, a few disappointments, so be aware. Having said that, whoever chose some of these tracks is a genius - The Thompson Twins' "In The Name of Love" - the best song they ever wrote; ditto Pychedelic Furs "Love My Way"; The Lotus Eaters; Furniture; Our Daughter's Wedding - all fantastic songs that I thought I'd lost forever when my vinyl collection finally disappeared. A few glaring errors? Well, where is Martha and the Muffins? And do we really have to have Ultravox's "Vienna" yet again?

But enjoy the gems on this collection - like Fiction Factory say, Feels Like Heaven.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mix of Stuff 27 Sep 2008
By Coincidence Vs Fate TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Um, my wife bought me this, the Edge Of The 70's and the Mix Tape one for our wedding anniversary this week, mainly due to being of a certain age, I guess, oh and having a massive obscure 80's music collection - I've been collecting since 1978 when I was 12.

I must say a lot of the tracks on this CD are hardly "on the edge" - Tears For Fears? Visage? Landscape? The Cure? Ultravox's "Vienna"? However, there are some surprising cuts on here. It's nice to see that B-Movie finally get on one of these complilations, hopefully Steve Hovington and the boys can finally make a bit of money. They were one of the truly great "undiscovered" bands of the new romantic era. That's the thing with the 80's for every Thompson Twins, Duran Duran and Tears For Fears there was a B-Movie.

Another nice touch from the compilers is even when they've included tracks by well-known acts they've avoided putting on the obvious, for example, we get the excellent "Love My Way" from the Furs, rather than the usual "Pretty in Pink";.

Other nice editions are from Our Daughters Wedding (great US synthpop), Telex, H20 and Furniture.

It's a shame that compilations like this can't include more 80's obscura, but I guess record companies have to consider how much they're going to recoup, so I suppose the obvious has to be given a place.

Overall a nice compilation with some juicy discoveries for some.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic reflection 5 Mar 2009
By M. Hill
Format:Audio CD
Great mix of eighties music that goes that little bit deeper then the usual eighties collection. A mix of classic eighties and the obscure. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to relive that eighties feeling.
