Product Description

A chef discovers that the old saw 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach' works for women as well in this romantic comedy from Germany. Gregor (Josef Ostendorf) is a gourmet chef who runs a small but highly regarded restaurant in Berlin. Gregor believes that food can awaken the erotic impulses and he revels in the sensual pleasures of his cooking; however, he hasn't had much luck in finding someone to share the joy of cooking with him. One night, Gregor meets Eden (Charlotte Roche), a woman who works as a waitress at a nearby resort hotel, and he's immediately smitten. However, Gregor soon discovers that Eden is married to Xaver (Devid Striesow), an older man who teaches dancercise to the elderly, and they have a young daughter with Down's syndrome. Since seducing Eden would be out of the question, Gregor does what, for him, is the next best thing -- he cooks for her, starting with a special chocolate cake for her birthday, and following with a variety of special dishes that awaken her to the physical pleasures of life. Gregor's culinary attentions make Eden happier at home, and kick-starts her sex life with her husband, but Xaver thinks something's not kosher about Eden's new friend, and when he learns she's pregnant, he wonders if Gregor might be the father. Eden won the Audience Award at the 2006 Rotterdam Film Festival.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Food and Love 21 Feb 2008
By The Soft Machine Operator TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Offbeat tale about a highly regarded chef called Gregor who befriends a waitress called Eden and her disabled daughter. Gregor's rather rotund and specialises in erotic cooking. He cooks for Eden regularly, but this leads to problems with her husband, an insecure failure, who does not care much for his own daughter.

I found it quite engrossing, tragic and uplifting at the same time. The characters are well done and Gregor is complex - shy, occasionally creepy, but ultimately a victim. Like a lot of European films, the pace is languid, which I don't mind, and the actors are performing naturally. I found the directing was particularly effective during scenes of drama thanks to closeups and pregnant pauses.

It's one of those films where you get to like or sympathise with the main character, but know something bad is going to happen to them, and the build up here is effective. Don't let the slow pace or subtitles put you off. This is well worth watching - keep a look out for some nice little themes that come back throughout the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eden by name, paradise by nature 16 Feb 2008
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This entertaining German confection promised little but delivered plenty. Gregor the gargantuan gourmand lives to eat and cooks to live. Chance throws niave waitress Eden into his path and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. However, two things stand in the way of their friendship - her buffoonish husband Xaver, and her supercilious father-in-law. These two do their best to scupper the burgeoning romance but only succeed in driving the two gastronomic lovebirds closer together.
A charmingly European quirky comedy drama, Eden presents the normal alongside the surreal. Gregor the chef is endearingly innocent whilst one yearns for Eden to escape the open prison of her marriage to the inadequate Xaver. The juxtaposition of carnal creativity with simple humour provides a rare insight into an aspect of our culture that is becoming more and more essential to the way we live our lives. After all as someone said recently, food is the new sex...!

4.0 out of 5 stars Different & Beautiful... 2 Feb 2008
By David Calcano VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This movie really surprised me... the initial 15min are a bit odd and grotesque, however, PLEASE hold on after them... the theme & characters are just AMAZING!
I don't agree this is a comedy at all! this is DRAMA, with a very original story... you'll get tears, laugh and cooking in a way that you've never seen before.
The expressions and acting from the cook is something unforgettable... how you start to love this character and understand him, until you'd go with him practically with anything...

Rent it, buy it, borrow it, but don't miss it! you won't regret it, just be patient and hold on after the first couple of minutes... the story will speak for itself and you'll start to love being weird yourself.
